US Patient Sick With Bird Flu Virus That Has "Pandemic Potential": Report

A resident of Washington state has been admitted to the hospital with an H5N5 bird flu infection, according to state health authorities. The strain detected in this patient has not previously been identified in humans, making the case noteworthy even though federal officials still consider the overall public threat to be low, according to a report by CNN.

This is the first reported human infection with avian influenza in the United States in nine months, yet the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that the current risk to the broader population remains limited.

Health officials describe the patient as an older adult from Grays Harbor County who already faced underlying medical issues. The individual has been hospitalised since early this month.

Investigators have not pinpointed how the virus was contracted, though early indications suggest that backyard poultry could be the source, and both health and agricultural agencies are continuing to probe the circumstances.

Avian influenza can be transmitted through an infected animal's saliva, mucus, faeces, and, in dairy cattle, milk. The likelihood of transmission typically increases during late fall and winter when migrating birds encounter domestic flocks.

Although avian influenza has long circulated among wild birds across the globe, the current US outbreak, which began in January 2022, has involved more infections in mammals than previous episodes.

There has been no evidence of human-to-human spread in the United States, but Washington state officials are monitoring people who may have had close contact with the patient to check for symptoms and offer testing or preventive treatment.

Despite the low overall risk, influenza researchers warn that the virus still poses concerns. Dr Richard Webby underscored the uncertainty around its evolution, saying the virus has "pandemic potential".

He added, "I think it's clear it's not an easy leap for this virus to make, to switch from being a duck virus to being a human virus. I think that's pretty clear, but I certainly wouldn't put money on the fact that it can't make that leap. It's going to take a little bit of the biologic stars aligning for that to happen. We could argue exactly how likely that is, but no one actually knows. Only time will tell us, unfortunately."

According to the CDC, 70 human cases have been identified in the US during the current outbreak. One elderly patient with existing medical conditions died in January.

Most cases have been mild, with symptoms such as red eyes or fever, although a few individuals have experienced more severe illness. The majority of those infected have direct and frequent exposure to animals. 41 cases have occurred among cattle workers and 24 among poultry workers, while two cases involved other forms of animal contact and three had no clear source.

The CDC urges people who regularly handle animals to wear appropriate protective gear and to exercise caution around animal waste.

Washington's Department of Health advises residents cleaning bird feeders or other areas contaminated by bird droppings to wear gloves and to disinfect surfaces with either a commercial product like Lysol or a bleach solution made by mixing one part bleach with ten parts water.

People are also encouraged to avoid approaching sick or dead wildlife and to use gloves, a well-fitting mask, and an inverted plastic bag when disposing of a dead bird. Double-bagging the carcass and placing it in a sealed trash bin prevents scavengers from accessing it, and thorough handwashing afterward is essential.

Officials additionally caution against consuming undercooked or unpasteurised dairy or meat products, including raw milk and raw cheese.

Public health leaders also recommend receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine. Although the standard flu shot does not protect against bird flu, it helps reduce the already low chance that a person could be simultaneously infected with both viruses, a situation that could potentially allow the avian influenza virus to mutate into a form capable of spreading more easily among people.

CSK Break Silence After Trading Ravindra Jadeja To RR: "He Was Very Clear"

Chennai Super Kings Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan discussed the franchise trading their key all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals, describing it as one of the most difficult decisions the team management had to make. Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, the league confirmed on Saturday that Jadeja and Sam Curran had been traded to RR, with CSK receiving Sanju Samson in exchange.
Although the news had been circulating for nearly a week, official confirmation from both franchises left many fans heartbroken. Both Jadeja and Samson had been integral parts of their respective teams, becoming the faces of their sides.

However, the CSK MD stated that the decision was mutual, and the players believed a change was necessary.

"Chennai Super Kings, as you know, have traded Jadeja and Sam Curran for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. As a franchise, you might know that over the years, we have not used the path of trading, except for one year when we got Robin Uthappa. The team management felt the need for a top-order Indian batsman. And since not many Indian batsmen are going to be available at the auction, we thought the best way to get an Indian top-order batter is to go through the trade window.

"And hence we have to take this call. And, this decision has been taken by the team management and it is a very tough decision leaving out Jaddu, who has been responsible for the success of CSK over the years. It was probably one of the toughest decisions that CSK had to take, that the team management had to take. Considering the transition of CSK at this point of time, the team management took the toughest decision.

"It is a must that we should consult with the players concerned. And it was after mutual agreement that we under took this. When I spoke to Jadeja, he was also very clear that if there is an opportunity for him because he is also, he also felt that he was at the fag end of his career in white ball. So he also felt that he can have a break," Kasi said in a video shared by the CSK.

"Sam Curran was with us in 2020, 2021 and 2025. He has been a Consistent performer for us. As I said earlier, leaving out Sam as well as Jaddu was one of the toughest calls. We have certain players who are at the fag end of their career. And it is very important for CSK to build a team in the next couple of years. And since this is a mini auction, we don't have the opportunity to get the best of the Indian batsmen.

"Sanju has been one of the most experienced IPL batsmen, having scored more than 4,500 runs. And he has also been leading Rajasthan Royals. He has the experience and he is only around 30 years. So, we thought that he will be a good addition for CSK to take care of the future. Emotionally, the fans will be very very upset because I have already got a lot of messages from the fans. But taking into account the current status of the team composition, nothing tank of the CSK cricket management felt the need for a change. And I am sure that in the years to come, CSK will maintain the same kind of consistency and also perform well," he added.

Jadeja, who played for CSK for 12 seasons and appeared in over 250 matches, is one of the most experienced players in the league. According to the trade agreement, his league fee has been reduced from Rs 18 crore to Rs 14 crore.

Meanwhile, Samson will represent CSK at his current league fee of Rs 18 crore. With 177 IPL matches to his name, he is also one of the league's most experienced players. This will be only his third franchise. Since his IPL debut in 2013, the senior player has mostly played for RR, apart from two seasons-2016 and 2017-when he played for Delhi Capitals.

"Mockery Of Cricket": Harbhajan Singh Blasts India vs South Africa Pitch

At one point, in the last session on Day 2 of the 1st India vs South Africa Test, it looked like the match would come to an end. South Africa batters struggled on an Eden Gardens pitch that offered prodigious turn. South Africa ended Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in deep trouble at 93/7, as India's spinners ripped through their batting line‑up. Ravindra Jadeja was the star performer, finishing the day with four wickets and once again proving why he is almost unplayable in home conditions. At Tea, South Africa were 18/1, but the final session turned into a complete collapse.

The Proteas lost six wickets while adding just 75 runs, unable to counter the turn and accuracy of India's spin trio. In total, the day produced 15 wickets, three in the morning, six in the afternoon, and six more in the final session.

India's spin great Harbhajan Singh was shocked at the turn of events. “Test cricket India vs South Africa – the game almost over on Day 2 isn't finished yet. What a mockery of Test cricket #RIPTESTCRICKET,” he wrote on X.

Aiden Markram was the first to go in the final session, dismissed for 4 by Jadeja. Wiaan Mulder followed for 11, with the left‑arm spinner striking again. Tony de Zorzi also failed to make an impact, falling for 2 as Jadeja pocketed his third of the day, leaving South Africa at 40/4. Tristan Stubbs became Jadeja's fourth victim, bowled for 5, before Marco Jansen was removed for 13 by Kuldeep Yadav, who picked up his second wicket of the innings.

Axar Patel also chipped in with a wicket, keeping the pressure firmly on the visitors. Jadeja's figures of 4/29 added another milestone to his outstanding home record. He is now the second cricketer after Stuart Broad to register both 2,000‑plus runs and 250‑plus wickets in a single country.

With 2,154 runs and 250 wickets in 52 home Tests, Jadeja also became the fourth Indian to claim 250 wickets on home soil. He is now the seventh bowler to reach 150 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC) and the third spinner to do so.

Kuldeep Yadav ended the day with 2/12, while Axar Patel returned 1/30. Corbin Bosch on 1 and skipper Temba Bavuma on 29 were unbeaten at stumps, with South Africa holding a slender lead of 63 runs – one they will hope to stretch on Day 3 to stay alive in the contest. Earlier, fiery bowling spells from South African spinner Simon Harmer and pacer Marco Jansen restricted India to 189/9.

Earlier on Day One, the Proteas won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite a half‑century partnership between openers Aiden Markram (31 in 48 balls, with five fours and a six) and Ryan Rickelton (23 in 22 balls, with four boundaries), the current WTC champions could not battle the pace and class of Jasprit Bumrah (5/27) and Mohammed Siraj (2/47), and were skittled out for 159 runs. India ended the first day at 37/1, with Marco Jansen getting Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12.

Brief scores: South Africa 159 & 93/7 (Temba Bavuma 29*, Marco Jansen 13; Ravindra Jadeja 4/29) vs India 189/9 (KL Rahul 39, Washington Sundar 29, Simon Harmer 4/30).

Seized Ammonium Nitrate Explodes Inside Police Station In Srinagar's Nowgam

Several casualties were feared after an explosion took place in a large quantity of ammonium nitrate that was confiscated by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. According to initial information, the blast happened when a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), along with police, was checking the explosive material. The police station was severely damaged in the blast. The adjacent buildings have also sustained damage due to the explosion.

The injured have been rushed to the Indian Army's 92 Base Hospital and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). Senior police officials have reached Nowgam, and the area has been cordoned off.

It was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nowgam who cracked the case of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed's posters in various locations of the area.

These posters exposed the terror module in which radicalised highly-qualified professionals were involved. The discovery led to the recovery of massive explosive material and the arrest of several terror doctors.

In October, one of the arrested doctors, Adeel Ahmad Rather, was seen putting up these posters that warned of big attacks on security forces and "outsiders" in Kashmir. His arrest on October 27 uncovered a sinister network, which was later found to be behind the Delhi blast that claimed 13 lives earlier this week.

The investigation into the posters revealed a "white-collar terror ecosystem, involving radicalised professionals and students in contact with foreign handlers, operating from Pakistan and other countries", the Jammu and Kashmir police said.

When the police scanned the CCTV footage of areas where the Jiash posters were put up, they identified Rather, who worked at the Government Medical College in Anantnag till October last year before moving to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

He was arrested soon after, and an assault rifle was also recovered from his locker in the Government Medical College.

While he was being questioned, the name of another doctor, Muzammil Shakeel, who worked at Al-Falah Medical College in Haryana's Faridabad, came up. During the raid at houses associated with Shakeel, the joint team of Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana Police recovered nearly 3,000 kg of Ammonium Nitrate. Shakeel's arrest led to more revelations and the arrest of another doctor, Shaheen Saeed - who worked at the same university - on Monday.

Hours later, an explosion ripped through a car which stopped at a red light on a jam-packed road near the iconic Red Fort, killing 13 people, injuring more than 20 and damaging several cars.

The next day, the name of another doctor - Umar Nabi - emerged. Top sources revealed he was driving the Hyundai i20 car in which the blast took place. Sources in the National Investigation Agency, which is probing the blast, said the seizure of the chemical used in bomb-making may have triggered a panic situation for the suspect and compelled him to relocate.

The sources told NDTV the nature of the blast indicates the suspect appeared to have assembled the improvised explosive device (IED) improperly. Investigators believe the suspects, in a panic, could not arm the IED for maximum damage.

"Ganga Flows From Bihar To Bengal, Created Path Of Victory For BJP": PM Modi

The NDA's massive win in Bihar has set the groundwork for a similar performance in neighbouring West Bengal, where Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress holds power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the BJP's headquarters in Delhi today.

"The river Ganga flows to Bengal via Bihar. And the victory in Bihar, like the river, has paved the way for our victory in Bengal," PM Modi said toward the end of his hour-long speech.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the Bihar election by winning over 200 of the 243 seats, with the BJP standing tall as the single-largest party.

"Your hopes are my pledge and your dreams are my inspiration. For the BJP, the party workers are its strength," PM Modi said, crediting the karyakartas for the stellar performance in Bihar.

Alluding to the decimation of the Mahagathbandhan, the Opposition alliance which the BJP had said would bring "Jungle Raj" if people elected them, PM Modi appealed to the people of Bengal to "uproot Jungle Raj" from their state too.

"Not just in Bengal, this victory will inspire our workers in the south too," PM Modi said.

Earlier in the day when trends showed the NDA's spectacular performance in Bihar, BJP leaders had already started talking about Bengal. BJP's Giriraj Singh's warning to Banerjee to "brace for the worst" found support from Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who said Bengal would see a "spectacular" BJP win in the election next year.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, invoking his 'Mission Bengal' theme, added a sharper edge: "Now the time comes to clean up the jungles of Bengal."

The Trinamool Congress on its official social media handle responded to the BJP's challenge.

"Bring it on," the ruling party in Bengal said. The post had an old video of Banerjee in which she was heard saying, "It is not easy to play with us."

"Uou slink into Bengal, groveling for votes, after branding our sacred land 'a state of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas.' To a party that wallows in such despicable slander, we hurl one searing question: Have you no shame at all?" the Trinamool Congress said.

"In 2026, the people of Bengal will democratically crush your arrogance underfoot and send you crawling back in disgrace. You are not welcome here, and you never will be," it said.

Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed any possibility of Bihar's verdict influencing Bengal's political course. "That is Bihar's equation. It has no connection with Bengal; with over 250 seats, Mamata Banerjee will become chief minister again," he added.
