10,000-Foot Drop, Pilot Injured: Boeing 737 Windshield Cracks Midair

A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight travelling from Denver to Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing after its windshield cracked midair, injuring one of the pilots.

The incident occurred on October 16, during flight UA1093, which was carrying 140 passengers and crew. The plane was flying at 36,000 feet when the damage was discovered.

According to reports, the aircraft descended to 26,000 feet before safely landing at Salt Lake City International Airport. Passengers were later rebooked on another aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, and reached Los Angeles after a six-hour delay.

Why Did The Windshield Crack?

Windshield cracks, while rare, do happen in aviation. But details surrounding the cause and the pilots' injuries make this case an unusual one.

Images shared online allegedly show burnt marks on the cracked windshield and bruising on one pilot's arm. This means that it was not a routine structural crack.

The aircraft was around 322 kilometres southeast of Salt Lake City when the crew spotted the damage and decided to divert. The pilots quickly followed emergency procedures, descending and landing safely.

Aviation enthusiasts believe that space debris or a small meteorite might have caused the impact, based on the scorch marks and unusual damage pattern on the windshield.

Typically, aircraft windshields are designed to withstand bird strikes and major pressure changes, but an object travelling at high speeds could easily breach the threshold.

United Airlines confirmed that no passengers were injured and described the pilot's condition as minor bruising. The airline has not yet commented on what caused the crack.

In a separate incident, on October 18, a United Airlines plane heading for its gate clipped the tail of another United aircraft at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. No one was hurt, and the 113 passengers were able to leave the plane after a delay, United officials said in a statement.

Abhinav Kashyap Reveals Salman Khan Told Om Puri To Quit Dabangg

Filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap has once again opened up about behind-the-scenes tensions on the sets of his 2010 blockbuster Dabangg. He recently alleged that Salman Khan's behaviour towards co-stars, particularly the late Om Puri, created conflict during the film's production.

What's Happening

  • In a recent interview with Bollywood Thikana, Abhinav Kashyap recounted a tense incident involving Om Puri. According to him, Salman Khan refused to perform a scene in which Chulbul Pandey was meant to touch Om Puri's feet, insisting, "I won't touch his feet."
  • Abhinav Kashyap said the scene was rewritten multiple times to satisfy Salman, which angered Om Puri.
  • He added, "Then I went to Om Puri with the revised scenes and he got angry with me. He asked me if Salman has asked to change the scenes. He went and spoke to Salman. He told him, 'Salman, why do you do this? Allah has given you so much why do you eat up everybody's role?' and Salman just sat there. Om Puri refused to do the role, and Salman said very rudely to him, 'Nahi karna jao kuchh aur karo (If you don't want to do this, then leave the film).'"
  • Despite the confrontation, Om Puri eventually agreed to continue with the project out of respect for Abhinav Kashyap.
  • "Om Puri ji was angry. I went to him to give it a last shot, and I told him that I would really like to have him in my film. He asked me if it is my first film, and when I said yes, he said I will do this for you," the filmmaker said.
  • Abhinav Kashyap also revealed that Salman's interference extended to other actors. He claimed that Arbaaz Khan's entire role was removed, while Mahie Gill, who was originally offered the lead role of Rajjo, had most of her screen time cut.
  • "Dabangg originally was 2.45 hours long but they forced me to shorten it and I reduced it to 2 hour and 20 minutes but Salman had more problem with others' roles than the length of the film. He cut Arbaaz's whole role. The matter of Arbaaz's role was settled between these brothers but Mahie Gill also did a role in the film. She was the 2nd lead in the film, but they cut most of her role, they ruined her career," he explained.
  • Abhinav Kashyap expressed regret over how Mahie was treated and said, "I had originally offered Mahie to play the role of Rajjo (female lead which marked the acting debut of Sonakshi Sinha) but I was not able to find a hero at that time. Then Arbaaz came in as producer and then hero was cast and everything else happened. Then I offered Mahie to play role of Arbaaz's love interest in the film and she didn't question me. She took whatever money was given to her. They treated her unfairly."

Background

Dabangg, directed by Abhinav Kashyap, marked a major breakthrough for Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha. The film's success, however, came amid reports of creative conflicts on set. Abhinav Kashyap had previously alleged that Salman exercised excessive control over the film, affecting other actors' roles and the director's creative decisions.

'Explore All Options': Harvard Professor On Indians Wanting To Study In US

Urging India to invest more in science, Tarun Khanna, the Jorge Paulo Lemann professor at the Harvard Business School, has said no country has escaped middle-income status without doing so.

In an insightful presentation followed by an interaction at the NDTV World Summit 2025 on Saturday, the professor also spoke about the need for students from India to look at all options, given the uncertainty in the US, the urgency for the world to act on climate change and what India needs to do to become a superpower.

Asked why India has not been able to showcase public investment in science, Khanna said the problem is not restricted to the country.

"I think most developing countries - we are currently what is called a low middle-income country... I would like us all to internalise that no country has escaped middle-income status without investing in science ever. It has not happened, so we have to do it," he said.

Citing an example of an interaction with CEOs in which only one said they had a proper conversation with a scientist in the past year, the professor said there is something stopping entrepreneurs from thinking of scientists and academic institutions as resources for ideas.

"The scientists dismiss the entrepreneurs, the entrepreneurs dismiss the scientists, and we are locked in this mutual suspicion which needs to be debugged... I think we need to try a lot of experiments to see how to debug that process to break that cycle of mistrust," Khanna said.

To a question on whether India can stand its own against China and the US, the professor said the country has a large young population and a very large market that it can leverage.

"But the second thing I would say is if we don't have our own science and our own scientific prowess, we are always going to be hostage to somebody else who has a better set of cards to play. So we better get our scientific act together. Otherwise, I think it's going to be very hard to be a superpower of any sort. That's just the reality. The good news is it's doable," he emphasised.

Along the same lines, Khanna said while startups and quick economic winds are good, India also needs to invest in, and focus on, areas which need a longer time horizon.

"I gave you a couple of examples from China just because it is the one country that has outstripped everybody, and so I think it is deserving of some introspection. Those are returns in multiple orders of magnitude that are higher than what we are pursuing - 100 times, 1,000 times, 10,000 times greater. So we need to play in the big leagues," he said.

US As Educational Destination

Asked about how the US is for Indian students, given the uncertainty and the shift in policies under the Trump administration, the professor said they should look at all options.

"Anybody who reads the news would know higher education is going through a tumultuous time and my university, Harvard, is no exception. These are uncertain times, and when students ask me 'should we be considering the United States?', my honest answer is you should consider all the options," Khanna said.

"At this point, we have plenty of interesting universities that are starting up in India, not just the IITs but liberal arts institutions, including Ashoka, Plaksha and FLAME. We have universities in Canada and the United Kingdom that are capitalising on the US uncertainty at this point, and are competing for talent. And, in the end, competition for talent is a good thing. It is good for the students, it is good for the academics and I just hope that the policy uncertainty in the United States dies down," he said.

Worrying Trends

On two trends that he feels are worrying for the world, the professor said he is worried about rising inequality and climate change.

"Markets have an uncanny ability to allocate resources to whoever is able to use them well at that moment, but they also seem to be generating quite a bit of inequality," he said.

"And the other one is managing the carbon footprint. There are seven environmental thresholds that constitute tipping points and the world has already gone over the tipping point for six out of the seven. So I think we are in a very precarious place as a human race vis-a-vis using too much carbon. It is fantastic to see India being so open to renewable energy," he said.

Rapid Fire

During a rapid fire, Khanna was asked to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi in one word and he said "hyper-prepared". He generated laughter soon after when, asked the same question about US President Donald Trump, he replied, "no idea".

On the NDTV World Summit, he said it was really fun to meet people from all walks of life.

Bihar Poll Candidate Leaves To File Nomination, Drops Out At Father's Order

Upset over not getting a BJP ticket for Bihar's Bhagalpur, Arjit Shashwat Choubey, son of former Union Minister Ashwini Choubey, was about to file nomination as an Independent candidate. But a phone call changed everything.

The call came as the candidate has reached the premises of the district collectorate, heavily garlanded and cheered on by supporters. Then the phone rang.

He took the call in front of reporters who waited to speak to him. After short, monosyllabic replies, the candidate turned back, without filing the papers.

Late, Choubey Junior explained the unexpected U-turn.

He said it was his father, Ashwini Choubey, who had called and issued very clear instructions.

"You are in the BJP and will remain in the BJP," he quoted the former minister as saying. The 43-year-old then decided to withdraw from the electoral fray, respecting his father's wishes. Choubey said he has been under constant pressure from the BJP's top leadership since announcing his decision to contest as an Independent.

"Today, my father and even my mother spoke to me. It was instruction from the BJP's top leadership," he told reporters. "How can I disobey them? I cannot rebel against my party and country or turn to oppose them," he added.

There was turmoil in the BJP on Thursday after the party again named Rohit Pandey the candidate. Sharma had lost to Congress's Ajeet Sharma in 2020 by 1 thousand-odd votes.

Arijit Choube had then declared his intention to run as an Independent from the constituency which his father had represented from 1995 to 2010. For the last three terms, Congress's Ajeet Sharma has been representing the constituency of southeastern Bihar in the state assembly.

Cobra Slithers Into House, Meets Its Would-Be Assassin: Rocky The Pet Dog

It was a David vs Goliath battle, and the only thing going in favour of the weaker opponent was its urge to protect its owner at all costs. As it happened, this was enough for David or, in this case, Rocky the pet dog, to beat a Goliath in the form of a deadly cobra, but not without suffering what could have been a fatal bite.

Around 1.30 pm on Tuesday, the cobra slithered into the yard at the house of Subash Krishna in Kerala's Alappuzha. While Krishna was away in the Middle East for work, his wife was at home and, determined to protect her at all costs, their pet dog, Rocky, stood in front of the cobra. A fight ensued and Rocky managed to kill the cobra.

When Krishna's wife came out to the yard after hearing the commotion, she saw the serpent lying dead and noticed Rocky had suffered a bite.

She rushed Rocky to a veterinary doctor and he was referred to several hospitals. A team led by veterinary surgeon Dr Bipin Prakash managed to treat the dog, and he is now on the road to recovery.

Krishna, who heard about Rocky's bravery from his wife, also rushed back to Kerala and is now by his side.

Hope War Will End Without Ukraine Needing Tomahawks: Trump During Meet With Zelensky

US President Donald Trump suggested Friday it would be premature to give Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, saying as he hosted Volodymyr Zelensky that he hoped to secure peace with Russia first.

"Hopefully they won't need it. Hopefully we'll be able to get the war over with without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump told reporters as he said opposite Zelensky in the Cabinet Room of the White House.

Trump shook hands with Zelensky, who was wearing a dark suit and shirt, outside the West Wing and briefly raised a fist but neither leader answered shouted questions.

The meeting comes a day after Trump announced a fresh summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin -- and cast doubt on giving Kyiv the powerful cruise missiles.

Ukraine has been lobbying Washington for Tomahawks for weeks, arguing that they could help put pressure on Russia to end its brutal three-and-a-half year invasion.

But on the eve of Zelensky's visit, Putin warned Trump in a call against delivering the weapons, saying it could escalate the war and jeopardize peace talks.

Trump also questioned whether he would grant Ukraine's wish, saying Washington could not "deplete" its own supplies of Tomahawks.

Trump and Putin agreed to a new summit in the Hungarian capital Budapest, which would be their first since an August meeting in Alaska that failed to produce any kind of peace deal.

'Many Questions'

Diplomatic talks on ending Russia's invasion have stalled since the Alaska summit.

Ukraine had hoped Zelensky's trip would add more pressure on Putin, especially by getting Tomahawks, which have a range of over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles).

But Trump, who once said he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, appears set on pursuing a new diplomatic breakthrough to follow the Gaza ceasefire deal that he brokered last week.

The Kremlin said Friday that "many questions" needed resolving before Putin and Trump could meet, including who would be on each negotiating team.

But it appeared to brush off suggestions Putin would have difficulty flying over European airspace.

Hungary said Friday it would ensure Putin could enter and "hold successful talks" with the US despite an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes.

"Budapest is the only suitable place in Europe for a USA-Russia peace summit," Hungarian President Viktor Orban said on X on Friday.

Trump Frustration

Zelensky's visit to Washington, Ukraine's main military backer, will be his third since Trump returned to office.

During this time, Trump's position on the Ukraine war has shifted dramatically back and forth.

At the start of his term, Trump and Putin reached out to each other as the US leader derided Zelensky as a "dictator without elections".

Tensions came to a head in February, when Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart of "not having the cards" in a bombshell televised meeting at the Oval Office.

Relations between the two have since warmed as Trump has expressed growing frustration with Putin.

But Trump has kept a channel of dialogue open with Putin, saying that they "get along." The US leader has repeatedly changed his position on sanctions and other steps against Russia following calls with the Russian president.

Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, describing it as a "special military operation" to demilitarize the country and prevent the expansion of NATO.

Kyiv and its European allies say the war is an illegal land grab that has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian and military casualties and widespread destruction.

Russia now occupies around a fifth of Ukrainian territory -- much of it ravaged by fighting. On Friday the Russian defense ministry announced it had captured three villages in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions.
