Peter Navarro Tried To Start Fight Between Trump, PM Modi: Ex US NSA

Peter Navarro, the trade advisor of Donald Trump, had once tried to start a fight between the US President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor of the US, told NDTV today. He suggested that it is a sideshow that can be safely ignored while the "the real negotiators dealing with the trade talks between the two countries sit down". India, he said, "can stay away from the threats and shouts in social media and just do the hard work and see if we can't reach an accommodation here".

"I'm not saying these issues are going to be easy or quickly resolved, but I think there will be good faith on both sides, and that's the way to try and work through it," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

As for Mr Navarro, he said, "If you left Peter alone in a room and came back an hour later, he would be in an argument with himself".

The trade advisor of President Trump has been sounding belligerent notes over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil, calling it "blood money".

He has dubbed India "Tariff Maharaja" and threatened that it "won't end well" for New Delhi if it does not "come around" at some point in trade negotiations with the United States.

He also made other statements that were called out and fact-checked.  His response was aggressive. India's "keyboard minions", he claimed, were using "Community Notes" on X to "bury the facts".

Asked about the time when Mr Navarro had tried to start an argument between President Trump and PM Modi during one of their meetings, Mr Bolton said it was a meeting "where I had hoped that the two leaders would talk about strategic issues, as dealing with China, dealing with enormous threats that we face through the rest of this century".

"And he just, Peter, just wanted to talk about what he felt were unfair Indian trade practices. Look, I have watched trade people do this. There are always grievances in trade issues. It is in the nature of the subject matter," he said.

Mr Bolton said while trade between Washington and New Delhi is unquestionably important, "between India and the US for the rest of this century, there are very, very important existential questions".

"I'm not diminishing the importance of trade. It makes a huge difference in both economies. But let's keep it in perspective," he added.

Two decades of gains in the India-US ties - reached through careful nurturing by multiple governments - had plummeted as President Trump imposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariff and then doubled it by adding another 25 per cent on account of New Delhi's Russian oil imports.

Lately, there appeared a bit of an uptick with President Trump and PM Modi exchanging messages on social media.

Regarding that, Mr Bolton said President Trump sees international relations "through the prism of his personal relationship with foreign leaders".

"So from Trump's perspective, if he and Prime Minister Modi have a good personal relationship, everything is fine between India and the United States. Obviously it is much more complicated than that. But at least from the Trump perspective, it's better than tweets and statements that are negative about Prime Minister Modi," Mr Bolton added.

Asked whether India's rest of relationship with China would affect strategic ties with the US, Mr Bolton said while he understood the sentiments in New Delhi, it is essential to keep "reality" in mind.

"I think it depends on whether you believe somehow China has changed its hegemonic aspirations all along its Indo-Pacific periphery.  And I don't think they have," he said.

"The bigger picture is the hard strategic reality, not just the strange things Donald Trump does.  So these realities remain.  And I think if we consider them in a low-key, non-public fashion and work them out, that the course ahead will become a lot easier for both Washington and New Delhi," Mr Bolton added.

Erika Kirk's "Love Story" Video For Husband Charlie Viral After His Death

Hours after far-right activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead at a public event in Utah, an old video of his wife, Erika Kirk, has surfaced on social media. Reports and videos of the 31-year-old's assassination triggered an outpouring of grief from his supporters.

Originally posted on Instagram in February 2025, Erika's video celebrated her relationship with her husband. She captioned it, "...thank you for being my love story." At the time, Mr Kirk replied simply but affectionately, writing, "My favourite," accompanied by a red heart emoji.

Now, after Kirk's death, the video was reshared by a user on X with the comment, "Sobbing watching this video from Charlie Kirk's wife. She captioned it 'thank you for being my love story'."

Social media users expressed shock and sorrow over both Kirk's death and the grief his family is enduring.

One wrote, "A family man who while not all agreed with him, was always respectful and allowed others to speak. He did not deserve to die, nor did his family deserve this. Heartbreaking."

Another user, tagging Erika, offered words of comfort, saying, "Your loss is unfathomable. Please know this country loves you, is with you, and we will never forget the beautiful man Charlie was."

Many comments highlighted the personal pain and empathy people felt for Erika. One user said, "This is every woman's worst nightmare."

Another wrote, "I just can't stop crying. Still hoping it's just a bad dream."

Mr Kirk, an ally of US President Donald Trump and the founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while addressing a gathering at Utah Valley University in Orem. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent an emergency surgery, but didn't survive. Follow LIVE updates on Charlie Kirk shooting here

Ex Nepal PM's Wife Suffers Injuries As Home Set Ablaze, Recovering In Hospital

Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of Nepal's ex-prime minister Jhalanath Khanal, suffered burn injuries on Tuesday after protesters set their house on fire.

The incident took place at their home in Dallu area in the capital Kathmandu.

Ms Chitrakar was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital and is recovering, said sources. Reports had earlier suggested that she had died.

Nepal's prime minister KP Sharma Oli, whose own house was set on fire, resigned Tuesday as protests against a short-lived ban on social media grew increasingly violent and expanded into broader criticism of his government and accusations of corruption among the Himalayan country's political elite.

Mr Oli's finance minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, 65, was chased through the streets of the capital, showed a disturbing video. The minister, showed the video, was kicked and thrashed brutally.

Demonstrations led by young people angry about the blocking of several social media sites gripped the country's capital a day earlier, and police opened fired on the crowds, killing 19 people.

The ban was lifted Monday night, but the protests continued, with demonstrators setting fire to the homes of some of Nepal's top leaders and the parliament building. The airport in the capital of Katmandu was shut, and army helicopters ferried some ministers to safe places.

As the protests intensified, Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli said he was stepping down immediately.

The demonstrations - called the protest of Gen Z - began after the government blocked platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, saying the companies had failed to register and submit to government oversight.

But even after the sites came back online, the rallies continued, fueled by anger over the deaths of protesters at the hands of police and against alleged corruption by the government.

In particular, many young people are angry that the children of political leaders - so-called Nepo Kids - seem to enjoy luxurious lifestyles and numerous advantages while most youth struggle to find work.

In the wake of unrest in Nepal, India has asked its citizens to defer travel to the neighbouring country until the situation stabilises.

Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines cancelled their flights from Delhi to Kathmandu on Tuesday amid the anti-government protests.

Suryakumar's Handshake With PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi Gets Brutal Reaction

Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian cricket team captain at the Asia Cup, was in focus on Tuesday at the captains' press conference. Ahead of the high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan on September 14, India's T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav, emphasised that aggression is essential in cricket and believes that without aggression, it's challenging to succeed in the sport. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on Wednesday in Dubai, whereas Pakistan will clash with Oman at the same venue on Friday. "Aggression is always there on the field, and without aggression, I don't think you can play this sport, and I am sure I am very excited to take the field," Suryakumar Yadav told the media.

Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha responded to Suryakumar Yadav's comments, emphasising that every player is distinct with their own approach to the game. "You don't need to say anything to any player because everyone is individually very different. If someone wants to be aggressive on the field, they are more than welcome to do that," Agha told the media.

Even after the press conference ended, the duo was in the limelight. Salman went off the stage even as other captains were shaking hands. That led to social media chatter that Suryakumar and Salman ignored each other. However, it was later seen that SKY and Salman had indeed shaken hands off stage. Another video went viral, where Suryakumar Yadav can be seen greeting Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Asian Cricket Council chief. That gesture was not well-received by most on social media.

In their previous clash in the T20 Asia Cup back in 2022, Pakistan got the better of India, defeating them by 5 wickets. Mohammad Nawaz was named Player of the Match for his 42 runs off 20 balls with the bat and a wicket with the ball.

India will play their final group-stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify.

If India finishes at the top of Group A, all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. If India finishes second, one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi, and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26.

Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

Team India squad for Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.

Reserve players: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Numbers In Its Favour For Veep Election, NDA Still Keeping Strict Eye On MPs

The ruling NDA is ready with an elaborate plan for the election of the Vice President tomorrow -- contest between NDA candidate Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan and Opposition's retired Supreme Court judge Justice Sudershan Reddy. Though the numbers are stacked up in favour of the ruling NDA, the ruling alliance has come up with a detailed plan to ensure there are no slips. The margin of the victory is not expected to be large, and the NDA is tracking every vote, sources said.

The MPs have been divided up and each group will be under the stern eye of a minister till the voting begins. The groups will meet in the morning for breakfast and then head for parliament together, sources said.

All Members of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh will gather at Piyush Goyal's residence at 8 am. MPs from the rest of north India - Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Uttarakhand will gather at the residence of Manohar Lal Khattar.

Members of Parliament from south India will gather at the residence of Prahlad Joshi. Shivraj Singh Chouhan will be in charge of members of Parliament from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

MPs from Rajasthan will gather at the residence of Arjun Meghwal, those from Gujarat at the residence of Mansukh Mandaviya, those from Bihar and Jharkhand at the residence of Nityanand Rai.

Maharashtra MPs will start from the residence of Bhupendra Yadav, Bengal and Odisha MPs from the residence of Dharmendra Pradhan and those from northeast at the residence of Kiren Rijiju.

The Vice-President is picked through secret ballot and the MPs are allowed to exercise their choice. But in practice, MPs mostly vote as per the unofficial party line. Cross-voting is not uncommon and happened during when Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected in 2022. Some expect a repetition this time as well.

At present there are 239 Rajya Sabha MPs and 542 Lok Sabha MPs, all of whom are eligible to vote. But with the decision of Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal and K Chandrashekar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi to abstain, the total number of MPs voting comes down to 770 and the majority mark is 386. The NDA has 427 MPs.

Background

Although neither Kartik nor Sreeleela have publicly confirmed their relationship, Kartik's mother, Mala Tiwari, dropped a hint earlier this year. During the IIFA Awards 2025, when asked about her future daughter-in-law's expectations, she said, "The family's demand is a very good doctor." Fans speculated this could be a subtle nod towards Sreeleela, who also studied to become a doctor.
