"India Will Be 20% Of Global Growth In Few Years": WEF Chief To NDTV At Davos

World Economic Forum (WEF) president and CEO Borge Brende has predicted India's growth has potential to reach 7-8% with the help of reforms.

At Davos, where the WEF brings together some of the world's biggest leaders and thinkers, India has had a huge presence every year, and one of the primary themes has been growth.

"India has a great potential, and it is still growing pretty well, 6 per cent this year. But there is no reason why India cannot pick up again and do 7 per cent, 8 per cent, provided that there are reforms on investments, infrastructure, investing in education and R&D [research and development]," Mr Brende told NDTV.

"We do expect that in a few years, India will be 20 per cent of the overall global growth. That is quite incredible. And what works also for India is the enormous strength in startups. There are more than 1,20,000 startups in India. I think there are now more than 120 unicorns. So that ecosystem, I think, is the basis also for future growth," the WEF president said.

On whether India's target of becoming a developed nation by 2047 is realistic, Mr Brende said India will be a $10 trillion economy soon, and what also works in the interest of India is that trade is now pivoting more towards digital trade and services.

"That's growing three times faster than traditional goods. And these are areas where India is very strong," he said.

To a question by NDTV on some of the key challenges or opportunities that come with greater digitalisation of the workforce, Mr Brende said, "It's increased productivity. And productivity is like producing more with less resources. And of course, this will challenge some jobs that are back offices today or other jobs. But if that can lead to people moving into areas where you produce higher up in the value chain, you can pay better, you can produce more. And that's prosperity."

"So, for India, there are of course huge opportunities when it comes to the new technologies. But short term, it also creates challenges because one has to upskill and reskill people," the WEF president said.

Climate Agenda

With the world grappling to stick to the 1.5 degree Celsius or below mark, the WEF has integrated climate as a primary driver in its processes.

"It's [climate] incredibly important. And I think you just came back from Los Angeles. You saw the wildfires. We have seen droughts. We know that agriculture production, production of food is being more challenged now because there are areas where you can't just grow what you used to grow.

"So in general, I would say that the cost of inaction far exceeds the cost of action when it comes to climate change. So we need to keep up the momentum. We will need to emit less CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the years to come to even be able to stick to a 2 degree target," Mr Brende told NDTV.

He said the 2 degree target means a lot, especially to countries that are most vulnerable, which happen to be countries that have emitted the least CO2, traditionally being African countries, but also including India that has already seen heat waves and "seen the cost of this".

The five-day meeting at Davos beginning Monday will explore how to re-launch growth, harness new technologies and strengthen social and economic resilience, according to the World Economic Forum. The global meeting will see participation by nearly 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries, including 350 governmental leaders.

India's participation at Davos aims to strengthen partnerships, attract investment, and position the country as a global leader in sustainable development and technological innovation. India is sending five Union ministers, three chief ministers, and ministers from several other states to the WEF this time.

Harassed By Lenders, Man Kills Wife And Son, Survives Suicide Attempt: Cops

A 45-year-old man on Saturday allegedly killed his wife and minor son by administering them a heavy dose of sleeping pills before attempting suicide due to “harassment” by moneylenders, police said.

The man, Vaibhav Hande from Chikhali near Pune city, is being treated in a hospital and police have booked four persons, identified as Santosh Kadam, Surekha Kadam, Santosh Pawar and Javed Khan, in connection with the deaths, the official said.

In his complaint, Vaibhav said he gave several sleeping pills to his wife Shubhangi Hande, 36, and their 9-year-old son Dhanraj in the morning, resulting in their death. Vaibhav then tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan in their flat.

On Friday night, Vaibhav had sent a note on the mobile phone of his 14-year-old son, whom he had sent to his relative's place in Mumbai, detailing his plan.

The teenager panicked after reading the message in the morning and made frantic calls to their neighbours to check on his family. When the neighbours did not get any response despite repeated knocks on the door, they called the police, the official said.

Police entered the flat and found Vaibhav alive. He was then rushed to a private hospital, the official said.

“The complainant had borrowed Rs 6 lakh and Rs 2 lakh at a monthly interest rate of 10 per cent from accused Santosh Kadam and Surekha, respectively. He had also taken Rs 4 lakh from Javed Khan at high interest,” the official said, quoting Vaibhav's complaint.

The complainant told the police that he had repaid the principal and an additional Rs 9 lakh to the moneylenders but they were harassing him to pay more, the official said.

The accused have been booked for criminal intimidation and a probe is underway, the official said.

Arvind Kejriwal On The 3 Promises He "Could Not Fulfil"

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday admitted that he could not fulfil three promises - cleaning of Yamuna river, providing clean drinking water and making Delhi's roads of European standard.

He said these tasks will be carried out in the next five years if AAP is re-elected in the assembly polls.

Addressing a gathering in Laxmi Bai Nagar, Mr Kejriwal reminded people of his promises and assured that the AAP government is working towards their completion.

"I am truthful to my promises. Either I fulfil them or I remind them that I promised but couldn't do it. I could not fulfill three promises - first cleaning the Yamuna, second, providing clean drinking water and third making Delhi's roads of European standards.

Mr Kejriwal said the work of cleaning Yamuna will be accomplished in two to three years.

"A lot of work has been done...Yamuna will be cleaned in the next two to three years. About 24-hour drinking water supply, this has been started in a colony of Rajendra Nagar. I inaugurated it...Now we will do it for all areas of Delhi. We will improve the quality of roads. All these 3 works will be completed in the next five years," he said.

Mr Kejriwal spoke of the AAP government's work for improving schools and the power situation.

"In the summer of 2014, there used to be power cuts for 10 hours. We have made sure that Delhi receives electricity for 24 hours. BJP has government in 20 states yet they don't provide electricity for 24 hours. Delhi also has the cheapest electricity," Mr Kejriwal said.

"We have provided good education to children. No government focused on government schools. We have built amazing government schools. Last year the result of government schools was 99.7 per cent. Private schools had 92 per cent results. I believe there's no bigger patriotic work than providing free and good education," he added.

Delhi Assembly elections will be held on February 5 and votes will be counted on February 8.

Gang Members Throw Bombs To Celebrate Birthday, Paraded Through Same Market

The police paraded them through the very market where they fired gun shots, threw down bombs in a busy market to celebrate the birthday of their gang leader in Uttar Pradesh, showed a video.

The incident, which was reported from the Lal Bangla area of Kanpur, took place on Wednesday.

CCTV footage helped zero in on the suspects and the police arrested three people.

The three arrested have been identified as Sahil (18), Debu Kumar Valmiki (27), and Razjulla (23).

The video showed that the men, surrounded by cops, were taken around the same busy market to restore confidence among the people.

A senior police officer assured that under no circumstances will the social peace be allowed to be disturbed.

"The police is keeping an eye on some of the associates of the three accused who have been arrested now and appropriate action will be taken against them," said the senior police officer.

"Things Trending Positive": Elon Musk On India-US Relationship

Tech billionaire Elon Musk told a delegation of leading Indian business figures at his SpaceX Starbase facility in Texas on Friday that he believes India-US ties are "trending positive" and that he favours an enhanced trade partnership between the two nations.

The Indian entrepreneurs, led by India Global Forum (IGF) to mark the UK-headquartered policy and events platform's expansion into the US this week, toured the company's cutting-edge space exploration facilities and witnessed the successful launch of SpaceX's Starship Flight 7.

During a moderated discussion, Musk emphasised the potential for deeper collaboration between the United States and India, particularly in the technology and space exploration sectors.

"Things are trending positive. I'm certainly in favour of lowering trade barriers to increase commerce between the US and India," Musk was quoted as saying during the session.

He went on to describe India as "one of the ancient civilisations and a very great and very complex one". The entrepreneur behind automotive major Tesla and social media platform X interacted with Indian business chiefs from across diverse sectors on the role of technology and India's growing role in the global innovation landscape.

The meeting comes just days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as US President for a second term on Monday and Musk's proposed role in his top team as co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

"This event underscores the growing importance of collaboration between India and global pioneers in shaping a sustainable and technology-driven future," said IGF Founder Manoj Ladwa. "As the world's most powerful democracy transitions to a Trump presidency, meaningful dialogue is more important than ever in these challenging times," he said.

"At India Global Forum, our mission is to bring together global leaders and innovators to tackle the defining challenges of our time... I believe India's rise presents limitless opportunities, and this meeting signifies the potential for powerful partnerships," he added.

The IGF delegation to Musk's Starbase in Texas included Prashant Ruia, Director - Essar Capital; Jay Kotak, Co-Head - Kotak811; Ritesh Agarwal, Founder & Group CEO - OYO; Kalyan Raman, CEO - Flipkart; Aryaman Birla, Director - Aditya Birla Management Corporation Private Limited; Nilesh Ved, Chairman - Apparel Group; and bestselling author Amish Tripathi, among others.

It followed a set of closed-door discussions on Thursday with members of the incoming Trump administration and key US stakeholders and policymakers, including Jacob Helberg - the Designated Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment in the new American administration. The dialogue, organised for IGF's US launch, also addressed the American economic landscape, exploring opportunities in digital infrastructure, tech, innovation and foreign investment, while highlighting ways to strengthen bilateral collaboration.
