CBI Registers FIR Over Alleged Irregularities In UGC-NET Exam

The CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) into the UGC-NET paper leak case on Thursday against unidentified persons on a reference from the Union Education Ministry, officials said.

The UGC-NET, 2024, exam for the selection of junior research fellows, assistant professors and PhD scholars was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 18 in two shifts across the country.

The next day, the University Grants Commission received inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (l4C) that the paper was available on the darknet and was allegedly being sold for Rs 5-6 lakh on messaging platforms, sources said.

They said the CBI will work in close coordination with the I4C while deploying its own darknet exploration software and systems to nail down the perpetrators.

According to the complaint from the Education Ministry, the inputs from I4C, which functions under the Union Home Ministry, "prima-facie indicate that the integrity of the examination may have been compromised", officials said.

"To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has decided to cancel the aforesaid examination and to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a thorough investigation in the matter," the reference note from the Secretary, Education Ministry, K Sanjay Murthy said.

The reference note is now part of the FIR.

The facts of the complaint prima facie disclose the commission of offences punishable under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown accused, the FIR states.

BJP Backs Party's Maharashtra Leadership After Poll Review Meet

The BJP has ruled out any change in its leadership in Maharashtra, where the party had its second worst setback after Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha electiions. "There will be no change in leadership in Maharashtra," Union Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters this evening after key leaders of the Maharashtra unit met party chief JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP won just nine seats in Maharashtra in the recent Lok Sabha elections, down from its 2019 tally of 22.

The tally was seen as a manifestation of the people's disapproval of the political shake-up over the last few years and the BJP's role in it.

The tremors had started with Uddhav Thackeray's breaking ranks with the NDA and joining hands with Sharad Pawar and the Congress after the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

But before the newly formed Maha Vikas Aghadi could stake claim to form government, Devendra Fadnavis made an attempt to form government with the help of Sharad Pawar's nephew Ajit Pawar and a few of his loyalists.

Three years later, the Shiv Sena split, pulling down the MVA government, and rebel leader Eknath Shinde formed government with the BJP, becoming the Chief Minister.  He had subsequently let slip that the plan was formed with the help of the BJP.

It was followed by the split in the NCP. In both cases, the Election Commission granted the party name and symbol to the rebels.

The verdict made the people's disapproval clear. Both Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar's NCP won a huge mandate, and the Congress too benefited.

In 2019, the BJP - allied with the undivided Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray - won 23 of 25 Lok Sabha seats it contested in Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena contested 23 and won 18. This time, the BJP won just nine seats. Its allies -- the splinter units of the Sena led by Eknath Shinde and NCP led by Ajit Pawar -- won eight of the 19 seats they contested.

17 Indian Cities Identified As Emerging Hot Spots For Real Estate: Report

Emerging cities will play a key role in India's march towards becoming the world's third largest economy. In its latest report "Equitable Growth and Emerging Real Estate Hotspots", Colliers says factors such as infrastructure development, digitization, tourism and changes in the office landscape will drive the next wave of urban growth.

By 2050, India is expected to have nearly 100 cities with populations exceeding one million, in addition to its eight mega-cities. In its report Colliers has identified over 100 such emerging cities to determine their real estate demand and growth potential over next 5-6 years.

The report says real estate sector in India is going through a transformation with smaller towns becoming vital to the economy, because of infrastructure, affordable houses, skilled labour and government support. The sector could reach USD 1 trillion by 2030 and potentially USD 5 trillion by 2050, contributing 14-16 per cent to India's GDP.

Colliers report projects urban growth in about 100 cities having a million population by 2050. After detailed analysis Colliers identified 30 potentially high growth cities from the universes of 100 plus cities. The report further says that 17 out of these 30 cities will emerge as real estate hot spots.

Cities like Amritsar, Ayodhya, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Varanasi are set to benefit from improved infrastructure and rising economic activities. These locations are strategically positioned to capitalize on enhanced connectivity and government initiatives, making them attractive destinations for real estate investments.

Patna and Puri in the eastern region are identified as potential growth centres, bolstered by infrastructure upgrades and increasing commercial activities.

Dwarka, Nagpur, Shirdi, and Surat in the western region are expected to see robust growth driven by industrial development and infrastructure expansion.

Coimbatore, Kochi, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam in the southern region are emerging as key hubs for residential and commercial developments, supported by strong local economies and infrastructural enhancements.

Indore in central India stands out with its strategic location and growing industrial base, making it a prominent destination for real estate investments.

The National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) and PM GatiShakti projects are pivotal in driving equitable growth beyond Tier I cities.

Enhanced connectivity and manufacturing activities are expected to spur demand across warehousing and residential segments in these emerging hotspots.

The shift towards hybrid work models is fuelling demand for office spaces in smaller cities. Locations like Coimbatore, Indore, and Kochi are witnessing increased interest as satellite office markets due to lower rental costs and affordable housing options, attracting both companies and skilled talent.

Increased digital penetration is transforming smaller towns into hubs for data centres and smart infrastructure.

Cities such as Jaipur, Kanpur, and Lucknow are anticipated to witness significant real estate activity driven by e-commerce and data consumption, leading to the development of fulfillment centres and warehouses.

Temple towns like Amritsar, Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Tirupati are set to benefit from spiritual tourism, supported by infrastructure improvements and government policies.

These destinations are expected to attract investments in hospitality and retail sectors, catering to growing tourist footfalls.

Badal Yagnik, CEO of Colliers India, highlighted, "Smaller towns are emerging as dynamic contributors to India's economy, driven by improved infrastructure, affordable real estate, skilled talent, and government initiatives. This growth is set to propel the real estate sector to an estimated USD 1 trillion by 2030 and potentially USD 5 trillion, a 14-16 per cent share in GDP by 2050."

Vimal Nadar, Senior Director & Head of Research at Colliers India, noted, "As tech giants and innovative start-ups tap into the skilled talent pools of emerging hubs, smaller cities are on the brink of a transformative boom in both office and residential markets. Office rental arbitrage, typically 20-30 per cent lower and relatively affordable housing market in these locales creates a win-win scenario for companies and employees alike."

As India gears towards achieving a USD 1 trillion real estate sector by 2030, and potentially a 14-16 per cent share in GDP by 2050, these emerging hotspots are expected to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and fostering sustainable urban development.

With supportive government policies and strategic investments, these cities are poised to attract both domestic and international investments, transforming them into vibrant centres of economic activity.

Telangana Congress MLA's Bakrid Greeting Sparks Row, He Apologises

A ruling Congress MLA in Telangana on Monday landed in a controversy after his Bakrid greetings on social media included a graphic image of a cow, drawing sharp response from the BJP.

The Congress legislator, Kumbam Anil Kumar Reddy, later apologised for the "inadvertent error", even as the post was removed from all related social media accounts.

The poster was supposed to have the image of a goat and it has now been removed from social media platforms, he said.

BJP MLA Raja Singh, taking exception to the image of a cow in Mr Reddy's Bakrid greetings, alleged Hindus are insulted wherever Congress forms government.

While there is nothing objectionable about greeting people on the occasion of Bakrid, what message does the MLA want to convey, Raja Singh, known for his strong Hindutva views, asked.

Why is Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy silent on the matter, he asked.

Anil Kumar Reddy, in a video release later, said he is a 'Ram bhakt' and that he has always followed traditions.

He said the poster was removed soon after the error was found out.

"If anyone is hurt, we apologise for it. Because, I am a Ram Bhakt," he said.

Mr Reddy said he has asked his social media team to thoroughly check before posting and that who posted the said poster (for him) is also being looked into.
