Man Puts Wife's Body In Freezer To Collect Pension, Jailed For 3.5 Years

A 57-year-old Norwegian man was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison by a Swedish court on Monday for fraud and falsifying records, according to Fox News. The man had preserved his wife's body in a freezer for almost five years in order to collect her pension.

The man's lawyer told local paper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, "They didn't want to be buried at a public cemetery but at the farm, actually. So he put her in the freezer to later bury her outside and then it fell by the wayside."

The man allegedly told his friends and family that his 60-year-old was alive even after she died from cancer in 2018. According to an English-language Norwegian news site, the woman's family reported her missing after losing contact with her, but the man kept telling them that she was either sleeping or unavailable before eventually telling them she no longer wanted to speak with them.

The police found her body in March following a tip, and the man admitted that he hid her death and body.

The man told investigators that he put his wife in a freezer after finding her dead in their home. The couple lived in Arjang, which is about 340 kilometres west of Stockholm.

According to a few local media reports, the man had stored the body in the freezer which he also used to store food. In the meantime, the man kept claiming the woman's pension and tax rebates, a total sum of more than 1.2 million Norwegian kroner ($116,000).

"The man also used the freezer for other purposes which I argue means that the deceased person's sanctity of the grave was violated every time the man opened and closed the freezer, which is an aggravating circumstance," said prosecutor Linda Karlsson in a statement.

The court has convicted the man on charges of gross breach of civil liberties, gross fraud, mutilating a corpse, and falsification of documents, among others.

INDIA Bloc To Boycott Some Anchors, TV Shows. List Out Soon

The Opposition INDIA bloc will boycott a group of television anchors and shows. The leaders will come up with a list of anchors whose debates and shows the Opposition leaders would boycott. In a statement today, the Coordination Committee said its subgroup on media will draw up the names of anchors and shows.

The decision on listing anchors and shows was taken at the first meeting of the INDIA coordination committee held at the home of Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar.

The opposition has repeatedly accused a section of media of hostility. During Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress has repeatedly accused a section of the media of giving it meagre coverage.

The people are supporting the Yatra and so is the social media.

But mainstream media "continues to boycott it," Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said. Reports said off the record, several leaders had hinted of retaliation.

"It is my allegation that editors have boycotted the yatra. Lakhs are joining the campaign. Will you not show such a huge campaign?" the Rajasthan Chief Minister had said.

In May 2019, the Congress had also boycotted television shows for a month.

"The Congress has decided to not send spokespersons on television debates for a month. All media channels/editors are requested to not place Congress representatives on their shows," senior party leader Randeep Surjewala had posted on Twitter, now renamed X.

The Coordination Committee has also decided to begin the process of seat-sharing in view of next year's general elections.

Woman Dies Of Rare Disease After Eating Sardines In Popular French Town

A woman died in France from botulism after eating sardines at a restaurant last week and 12 other people were in treatment for the rare condition, health officials said Wednesday.

Botulism is a serious neurological illness typically brought on by eating food that has been improperly preserved.

The restaurant in Bordeaux, southwestern France, had preserved the sardines itself, the DGS health authority said late Tuesday.

The nationality of the dead woman, aged 32, has not yet been determined, a source close to the case said.

A doctor at the Pellegrin hospital in Bordeaux, Benjamin Clouzeau, said 12 more people were still receiving emergency treatment early Wednesday. Five of them were on respiratory support.

The group included American, Irish and Canadian nationals, he said.

A German national travelled home for treatment, as did a resident of Barcelona, Spain, the doctor said.

All of them had eaten at the restaurant, the "Tchin Tchin Wine Bar" in Bordeaux, between September 4 and 10 when there are typically large numbers of tourists in the town, famous for its wine and food.

They all ate sardines that had been stored by the restaurant owner himself in jars, the DGS said.

Botulism is deadly in five to 10 percent of cases because of a toxin generated by clostridium botulinum bacteria that can appear when preserved food is insufficiently sterilised.

Authorities were still running tests at the restaurant, the DGS said, adding it could not rule out the emergence of further cases of botulism which has an incubation period of up to several days.

It can cause muscle paralysis lasting several weeks, with the most immediate danger stemming from affected respiratory muscles.

Local newspaper Sud-Ouest quoted the restaurant owner as saying that he had thrown out some of the jars containing sardines because of a "strong smell" emanating from the containers when he opened them.

But others "appeared in good condition and were served up to customers", he said.

Chandrababu Naidu To Stay In Jail, Court Rejects Wife's "Safety" Request

An anti-corruption court cited "security" as it rejected a house custody plea for jailed ex-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who will now spend the rest of his two-week remand period in jail, unless he gets relief in the form of bail. On Tuesday Mr Naidu had been sent to judicial custody after he was arrested in connection with an alleged multi-crore scam.

The court in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada rejected arguments from Mr Naidu's legal team and his wife, who spoke of her "worry for his safety inside jail". "I did not see any special arrangements made for him," she told reporters after the court refused to quash Mr Naidu's remand order.

"I felt I left a part of me inside. They have tied him up in the building he helped construct," she said.

Mr Naidu's wife, Bhuvaneswari; his son, Lokesh; and his daughter-in-law, Brahmani; met the former Chief Minister at the jail in Rajahmundry, to which he was taken on Sunday. Bhuvaneswari called on workers from her husband's Telugu Desam Party to speak out and support him.

"Not just TDP cadre... but the people need to stand up for Mr Naidu, who always put the welfare of the people before that of his family. I give you my word that the TDP, established by Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (who is her father), is here to stay," she declared.

The TDP founder, referred to by his initials - NTR - invoked Telugu pride to establish his party as a force to be reckoned with in a short period of time.

Earlier today, actor-politician Balakrishna - a party lawmaker from Hindupur and NTR's son, said it was time for the people to "throw out" Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. "No need to be afraid of anyone. I am coming... will show them valour and strength of Telugu people."

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Police's Crime Investigation Department has sought five-day custody of Mr Naidu, arguing they need to interrogate him as the alleged is a serious economic offence and as the "prime conspirator", Chandrababu Naidu, had "full knowledge" of events.

What Is The Skill Development Corporation Scam?

The multi-crore scam deals with money allocated to the Department of Skill Entrepreneurship and Innovation by the state, and incorporated into the 2015-16 budget.

According to the CID, inquiries revealed serious irregularities, specifically, before any expenditure by private entities, the then government provided an advance of Rs 371 crores, representing the entire 10 per cent commitment by the government.

Most of the money advanced was diverted to shell companies through fake invoices, with no actual delivery or sale of items mentioned in invoices, officials said.

CID officials have also said senior government officials, including then chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao, made notings in related files. They had objected to the advance release of funds to Design Tech and noted that this was being done on the instructions of N Chandrababu Naidu.

Man Streams Suicide On Instagram, Wife Says Woman Friend "Tortured" Him

A 35-year-old man in Gurugram allegedly died by suicide while he was live-streaming on Instagram from a hotel room, the police said. The man has been identified as Vikram, they added.

His wife, Neeru, has accused a woman of blackmailing him and forcing him to take the step.

In her complaint, Neeru, a native of Hisar, claimed Vikram was invited to a hotel in Sector 38 by his friend Anshi to celebrate her birthday.

"At the hotel, my husband was forced to die by suicide and stream it live on Instagram. She was constantly blackmailing Vikram and demanding money from him. She had some objectionable videos of them which she threatened to make upload online. She tortured Vikram twice and forced him to kill himself," Neeru said in her complaint, according to the police.

The couple lived with their two children in Gurugram's Rajendra Park area, she said.

Following her complaint, an FIR was registered against the female friend under the Indian Penal Code for abetment to suicide, the police said.

"An FIR has been registered against Anshi, a native of Himachal Pradesh, as per the complaint. We are verifying the facts and action will be taken as per the law," said Inspector Subhash Chand.

Impeachment Probe Into Biden Gets Go-Ahead From US House Speaker

The Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, bowed to pressure from his party's hard right Tuesday and gave the go-ahead for an impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden.

"I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry," he said, saying the Democratic president lied to the American people about his son Hunter's foreign business dealings.

"House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations about President Biden's conduct," he said. "Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption."

The business dealings of Joe Biden's son Hunter while his father was vice president under Barack Obama have been a constant target of Republicans.

No credible evidence has emerged so far, however, that the elder Biden was involved in anything illegal.

Kevin McCarthy has been under pressure from the right-wing of the party, loyal to Donald Trump, for months to open an impeachment inquiry into 80-year-old Joe Biden.

The White House immediately condemned the move, calling it "extreme politics at its worst."

"House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing," Ian Sams, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kevin McCarthy, who was forced to compromise with the far-right of the party to win his powerful speaker's post, said the "allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption" against Biden "warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives."

Democratic lawmakers have denounced the move as a purely partisan exercise intended to exact revenge for the double impeachment by the House of former Republican President Donald Trump.
