Chandrababu Naidu To Stay In Jail, Court Rejects Wife's "Safety" Request

An anti-corruption court cited "security" as it rejected a house custody plea for jailed ex-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who will now spend the rest of his two-week remand period in jail, unless he gets relief in the form of bail. On Tuesday Mr Naidu had been sent to judicial custody after he was arrested in connection with an alleged multi-crore scam.

The court in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada rejected arguments from Mr Naidu's legal team and his wife, who spoke of her "worry for his safety inside jail". "I did not see any special arrangements made for him," she told reporters after the court refused to quash Mr Naidu's remand order.

"I felt I left a part of me inside. They have tied him up in the building he helped construct," she said.

Mr Naidu's wife, Bhuvaneswari; his son, Lokesh; and his daughter-in-law, Brahmani; met the former Chief Minister at the jail in Rajahmundry, to which he was taken on Sunday. Bhuvaneswari called on workers from her husband's Telugu Desam Party to speak out and support him.

"Not just TDP cadre... but the people need to stand up for Mr Naidu, who always put the welfare of the people before that of his family. I give you my word that the TDP, established by Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (who is her father), is here to stay," she declared.

The TDP founder, referred to by his initials - NTR - invoked Telugu pride to establish his party as a force to be reckoned with in a short period of time.

Earlier today, actor-politician Balakrishna - a party lawmaker from Hindupur and NTR's son, said it was time for the people to "throw out" Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. "No need to be afraid of anyone. I am coming... will show them valour and strength of Telugu people."

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Police's Crime Investigation Department has sought five-day custody of Mr Naidu, arguing they need to interrogate him as the alleged is a serious economic offence and as the "prime conspirator", Chandrababu Naidu, had "full knowledge" of events.

What Is The Skill Development Corporation Scam?

The multi-crore scam deals with money allocated to the Department of Skill Entrepreneurship and Innovation by the state, and incorporated into the 2015-16 budget.

According to the CID, inquiries revealed serious irregularities, specifically, before any expenditure by private entities, the then government provided an advance of Rs 371 crores, representing the entire 10 per cent commitment by the government.

Most of the money advanced was diverted to shell companies through fake invoices, with no actual delivery or sale of items mentioned in invoices, officials said.

CID officials have also said senior government officials, including then chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao, made notings in related files. They had objected to the advance release of funds to Design Tech and noted that this was being done on the instructions of N Chandrababu Naidu.

Man Streams Suicide On Instagram, Wife Says Woman Friend "Tortured" Him

A 35-year-old man in Gurugram allegedly died by suicide while he was live-streaming on Instagram from a hotel room, the police said. The man has been identified as Vikram, they added.

His wife, Neeru, has accused a woman of blackmailing him and forcing him to take the step.

In her complaint, Neeru, a native of Hisar, claimed Vikram was invited to a hotel in Sector 38 by his friend Anshi to celebrate her birthday.

"At the hotel, my husband was forced to die by suicide and stream it live on Instagram. She was constantly blackmailing Vikram and demanding money from him. She had some objectionable videos of them which she threatened to make upload online. She tortured Vikram twice and forced him to kill himself," Neeru said in her complaint, according to the police.

The couple lived with their two children in Gurugram's Rajendra Park area, she said.

Following her complaint, an FIR was registered against the female friend under the Indian Penal Code for abetment to suicide, the police said.

"An FIR has been registered against Anshi, a native of Himachal Pradesh, as per the complaint. We are verifying the facts and action will be taken as per the law," said Inspector Subhash Chand.

Impeachment Probe Into Biden Gets Go-Ahead From US House Speaker

The Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, bowed to pressure from his party's hard right Tuesday and gave the go-ahead for an impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden.

"I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry," he said, saying the Democratic president lied to the American people about his son Hunter's foreign business dealings.

"House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations about President Biden's conduct," he said. "Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption."

The business dealings of Joe Biden's son Hunter while his father was vice president under Barack Obama have been a constant target of Republicans.

No credible evidence has emerged so far, however, that the elder Biden was involved in anything illegal.

Kevin McCarthy has been under pressure from the right-wing of the party, loyal to Donald Trump, for months to open an impeachment inquiry into 80-year-old Joe Biden.

The White House immediately condemned the move, calling it "extreme politics at its worst."

"House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing," Ian Sams, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kevin McCarthy, who was forced to compromise with the far-right of the party to win his powerful speaker's post, said the "allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption" against Biden "warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives."

Democratic lawmakers have denounced the move as a purely partisan exercise intended to exact revenge for the double impeachment by the House of former Republican President Donald Trump.

Ailing US Explorer Rescued After Nine Days In Turkish Cave

An international team of rescuers on Tuesday pulled to safety a US explorer who spent nine days trapped deep in the narrow tunnels of a Turkish cave with internal bleeding.

"Mark Dickey was removed from the last exit of the cave," the Turkish Caving Federation said, adding that the "cave rescue part of the operation has ended successfully."

The 40-year-old explorer developed stomach problems while examining the depths of the Morca Cave, a remote complex of twisting underground passageways in southern Turkey's Taurus Mountains.

The cave, Turkey's third-deepest, reaches nearly 1.3 kilometres (0.8 miles) below ground at its lowest point.

Dickey fell ill at a depth of 1,120 metres (3,695 feet), sparking what organisers said was one of the largest and most complicated underground rescue operations ever mounted.

An international team of 200 rescuers, fellow explorers and medics began to cautiously pull Dickey to safety after first giving him infusions of blood.

They first strapped him to a stretcher, which sometimes needed to be lifted vertically by rope through particularly narrow passageways.

The teams pulling the ropes would occasionally take breaks, climbing back up to the surface before returning underground.

"We congratulate all those who contributed," the Turkish Caving Federation said.

- 'Saved my life' -

Officials said Dickey's health has been steadily improving for a few days.

"He is in good health in general. He continues to be fed with liquids," Cenk Yildiz, the head of the local branch of Turkey's emergency response service, told reporters late on Sunday.

"We have resolved his stomach bleeding issues with plasma and serum support."

In a video recorded on Wednesday, Dickey thanked the Turkish government for its help.

"The quick response of the Turkish government to get the medical supplies that I needed, in my opinion saved my life," Dickey said.

The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) called Dickey an experienced explorer with a medical background.

The New York state native is a "well-known figure in the international speleological community, a highly trained caver, and a cave rescuer himself," the ECRA said.

"In addition to his activities as a speleologist, he is also the secretary of the ECRA medical committee and an instructor for cave rescue organisations in the USA."

Updated Asia Cup Super 4 Points Table After India's Big Win Over Pakistan

Kuldeep Yadav registered a five-wicket haul while Virat Kohli and KL Rahul smashed unbeaten centuries as India outplayed Pakistan by 228 runs in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match in Colombo on Monday. The game that started on Sunday but was moved to the reserve day due to rain eventually saw India finishing on a high with the bat as well as the ball. Resuming at the score of 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs on Monday with Kohli and Rahul at the crease, India posted a daunting total of 356 for 2 in 50 overs against Pakistan.

Kohli scored 122 not out while Rahul hit unbeaten 111 to steer India to the big total. Only if India's dominance in the game lacked anything, Kuldeep returned with figures of 5 for 25.

After the big victory, India rose to the top spot in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 table. They have two points to their credit but a superb net run rate (NRR) of +4.560 has put them at helm.

On the other hand, Pakistan slipped to the number three spot with an NRR of -1.892.

Sri Lanka are at the second spot with an NRR of +0.420 while Bangladesh are at the bottom place in the four-team table with an NRR of -0.749.

Here is the updated table:

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Talking about the game, Kohli's supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by record 228-run margin in the rain-marred contest.

This is India's biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours.

India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummelled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

SpiceJet To Pay $1.5 Million To Credit Suisse After Supreme Court Order

SpiceJet said on Monday it would pay $1.5 million to Credit Suisse as demanded by the Supreme Court.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court ordered SpiceJet to make the payment by September 15 in a case related to unpaid dues and warned the budget airline of unspecified "drastic action" at the next hearing if it failed to do so.

A third of the amount is part of a monthly settlement plan SpiceJet had previously agreed with Credit Suisse, and the rest are unpaid dues to the bank that have accrued since last year after the airline failed to keep up with the payment schedule.

If SpiceJet fails to pay, the Supreme Court will take "drastic action" at the next hearing on September 22, it said.

"Enough of this dilly-dally business ... We are not bothered even if you die," one of the two judges said during the hearing, which was attended by SpiceJet chief Ajay Singh.

The airline had previously said the Credit Suisse debt was an old one that predated the tenure of its current management.

Credit Suisse and SpiceJet have been engaged in a legal dispute since 2015 over the bank's claim of unpaid dues of around $24 million, which led to the Madras High Court's order that the airline be wound up in 2021.

Even after agreeing to a settlement plan, the dues were not paid, and in March Credit Suisse approached the Supreme Court seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against SpiceJet and Singh over "a wilful and intentional disobedience" of court orders and failure to pay dues of $4.5 million.

The court order is the latest setback for cash-strapped SpiceJet which told a court last month it was "struggling to stay afloat" after it was ordered to pay Rs 100 crores to its former owner, Kalanithi Maran, by September 10 as part of an arbitration order in a separate case.

In that case, also heard on Monday at a Delhi High Court, SpiceJet said it had deposited 625 million rupees of that amount.

The airline said late on Monday it would complete the payment of 1 billion rupees to Mr Maran by Tuesday.
