6 Labourers Killed Near Mumbai As Lift Crashes Down 40 Floors

At least six workers were killed and another injured when the construction lift at a 40-storey under-construction building collapsed this evening in the Balkum area in Thane near Mumbai, officials said.

Yasin Tadvi, who heads the disaster management cell of Thane Municipal Corporation, said it was a construction lift and not the regular elevator which came crashing down from the 40th floor and landed at P3 (three levels underground in the parking area).

The building is located off the Ghodbunder Road.

One of the supporting cables of the lift snapped, leading to the incident which occurred at around 5:30 pm, he added.

After receiving the information, a team of Regional Disaster Management Cell and Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the spot and pulled out the workers from the basement parking.

"It was not immediately clear how the lift cable malfunctioned," Mr Tadvi added.

The dead labourers have been identified as Mahendra Choupal (32), Rupesh Kumar Das (21), Harun Sheikh (47), Mithlesh (35), and Karidas (38). Another person is yet to be unidentified.

India vs Pak, Asia Cup: Hourly Forecast Of Colombo Weather On Reserve Day

Intermittent rain pushed the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Super 4 clash to a reserve day on Sunday. India were 147 for two in 24.1 overs when heavy rain lashed the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The rain stopped after that but the resumption was delayed due to wet outfield. A couple of wet patches on the ground was the main reason. The groundstaff even used fans to dry the areas apart from using sponge. However, before the game could resume heavy rain arrived again and forced the game to be moved to Monday.

Play on Monday will resume at 3 pm IST. Before the match resumes, here is an hourly forecast of the Colombo weather -

At 2pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 49 percent

At 3pm: Temperature - 28 degree Celsius, rain probability - 49 percent

At 4pm: Temperature - 28 degree Celsius, rain probability - 71 percent

At 5pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 71 percent

At 6pm: Temperature - 28 degree Celsius, rain probability - 49 percent

At 7pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 63 percent

At 8pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 49 percent

At 9pm: Temperature - 28 degree Celsius, rain probability - 49 percent

At 10pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 51 percent

At 11pm: Temperature - 27 degree Celsius, rain probability - 47 percent

The weather forecast has been taken from AccuWeather

The activation of reserve day also means that in less than 24 hours of completion of the Pakistan game, India will meet Sri Lanka in their next Super Four encounter on Tuesday. Before the weather played spoilsport, Virat Kohli and K L Rahul were batting on 8 and 17 respectively after openers Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) struck fine half-centuries.

India's Asia Cup opener against Pakistan was called off due to rain.

The weather has been a subject of intense debate through the Sri Lanka leg of Asia Cup. Rain is expected in the Sri Lankan capital throughout the tournament.

Asian Cricket Council's decision to keep a reserve day only for Sunday's game and the final also triggered a controversy.

IND vs PAK: Weather Forecast and Rain Prediction For Game Day, Reserve Day

India and Pakistan are set to face off in the Asia Cup for the second time in the ongoing edition on Sunday. Last week, the India vs Pakistan group stage match was washed out due to rain in Pallekele, with both teams sharing a point each. The focus will be on the rain gods as India and Pakistan square off once again, this time at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. On Friday, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) added a reserve day for the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan.

"A reserve day has been incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4's match between India and Pakistan scheduled to take place on 10th September at Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended," the ACC said in a statement.

As anticipation builds for the clash of the two Asia giants, weather conditions are casting a shadow over the fixture as the forecast predicts as rain could play spoilsport on both, the game day as well as the reserve day.

As per Weather.com, there is a 90-100 per cent chance of rain in Colombo on Sunday, with thunderstorms.

On the reserve day, there is a 90 per cent chance of rain, alongwith thunderstorms.

Accuweather also predicts high probablity of rain with 94 and 95 per cent cloud cover on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

"Cloudy with a couple of thunderstorms, especially late in the day," the forecast read.

The India vs Pakistan match is the only one in the Super Four stage to have a reserve day.

However, the coaches of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- the other two teams in round two -- have voiced their displeasure over the exemption granted by the ACC.

The exemption, however, has been granted keeping in mind that the clash of arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, brings in a lot of revenue for broadcasters.
