Case Against TV Journalist For Filming, Harassing Women Leaving Bar

The Chennai Police have filed a case against a TV journalist of News Tamil 24x7 and others for their alleged involvement in the sexual harassment of women at a bar in the early hours of Monday.

Reports said the women leaving the bar were not only filmed without consent but also subjected to abuse and obscene comments. The footage, telecast by several TV channels, sparked outrage on social media.

The charges include sexual harassment, explicit sexual behaviour, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly, singing obscene songs, and intent to insult a woman's modesty.

The police said they are investigating the matter.

The incident highlighted the need for strict action against any form of harassment and the responsible use of media platforms.

Investigators said trouble started when five members who were denied entry at a private bar after the bar timing ended created a ruckus. Many customers were reportedly watching the world cup cricket final match and the subsequent programmes since Sunday night.

On hearing about this, the accused Sudharsan and the others came.

"While taking video, a few unknown people used abusive, denigrating and obscene remarks against the women coming out of the bar, which were telecast later in various channels," the police said in a statement.

Neither News Tamil 24x7 nor the journalist Sudharshan has responded to the allegations or the police charges.

"Can't Be Fishing Inquiry": Experts To NDTV On Hindenburg Case Petitioners

The Supreme Court on Friday raised tough questions against petitioners in the case linked to a report by a George Soros-funded group that targeted the Adani Group. "Why must we take foreign reports as the truth? We are not rejecting the report, but we need proof. So what proof do you have against the Adani Group?" Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told the petitioner's lawyer Prashant Bhushan. "A publication's work can't be treated as a gospel of truth," Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

The Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), funded by billionaire George Soros, had alleged insider trading in the Adani Group via two foreign investors. The Adani Group has called them "recycled allegations" and another concerted bid by Soros-funded interests supported by a section of the foreign media to revive the "meritless Hindenburg report".

Experts speak to NDTV on the development:

"The Supreme Court very rightly pointed out three important questions to the petitioner's counsel. The court said look, when you take information from random public places, you should check it. It is easy to make allegations cooked up outside this country... The expert committee set up by the Supreme Court has already said there is no evidence of regulatory failure. They (petitioners) are relying on newspaper reports and other material, but where is the evidence? The report (by the George Soros-backed group) was meant to destabilise the country." - Ashwani Dubey, lawyer, Supreme Court.

"What the Supreme Court said is that the petitioners had approached the court on the basis of the Hindenburg report... Essentially, what is happening is that after the court appointed the panel, the petitioners have now come up with questioning the integrity of the panel members, which the court today said is not correct. The Congress party has been raising the issue on many platforms. I don't see this gaining any traction... This has the potential of becoming Rafale 2.0 for the Congress by barking up the wrong tree... When the petitioners are talking about the integrity of the panel and conflict of interest, they should also be wary of the conflict of interest of the people who prepared the (Hindenburg) report. So we can't give clean chit to the people who have prepared the report. They don't have honest intention. This report was predominantly used by shortsellers to make money. The SEBI has regulations to protect the interest of small investors..." - Amitabh Tiwari, political analysts.

"Given a choice, I would say that one can't file false charges against anybody, but levelling charges against regulated institutions and statutory bodies is more serious. Anybody and anyone who does this should have concrete proof. The court was very clear the charges levelled have no basis. The intent and timing of the report was suspicious, I have been saying from the start..." - JN Gupta, former executive director, SEBI.

"... They (petitioners) are asking for a fishing inquiry. It is never permitted in a court, that they make an allegation and we go and find evidence. That kind of thing is never permitted in court. This was exactly politically motivated. The credibility of SEBI was upheld. It is doing a perfect job... Hindenburg, we all know, is a short seller, who targeted Adani. We need to be careful. You also saw Mahua Moitra matter where Adani was targeted..." - Desh Ratan Nigam, lawyer, Supreme Court.

"Hamas Took My Daughter": Father Pleads For Return Of Kidnapped Daughter

A father is pleading for the return of his 9-year-old daughter. Emily Hand was kidnapped by Hamas in its attack on Israel on October 7. She is believed to be one of over 240 hostages currently held by Hamas. The father, Thomas Hand is pleading for Emily's return after Israel and Hamas reached an agreement for a four-day truce. The deal calls for 50 civilian hostages held by Hamas to be released and for Palestinians in Israeli prisons to be released.

"That'd be very great for everyone concerned on both sides," Thomas Hand, 63 told The Guardian. "It gives me hope, but until I see her, until I'm holding her I won't believe anything. Until I see it, I won't believe it."

Mr Hand during a press conference in London described his life as a nightmare. "I know the Israeli government and the army will do everything in their capabilities to get them back."

Emily was initially believed to be among the 1,200 Israelis killed during the surprise attack by Hamas in southern Israel. Now, she is counted among the 240 hostages in Gaza.

"My sole purpose in life now is to do everything I can to get my little daughter Emily back," said Hand, who after living in Be'eri kibbutz for 20 years working in a printing house, now lives in a hotel near the Dead Sea. "Nothing else concerns me."

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also shared a video on its Facebook page and wrote, "This beautiful 8-year-old girl Emily Hand was believed to have been murdered by Hamas terrorists on October 7th. We now know she is being held hostage by Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Please share this and help us bring Emily home."

Under the Israel-Hamas deal, the two sides agreed to a four-day truce so that 50 women and children under the age of 19 taken hostage could be freed in return for 150 Palestinian women and teenagers in Israeli detention, Reuters reported.

The four-day truce will start at 7 am local time (05:00 GMT) on Friday and the first 13 civilian captives will be released at about 4 pm (14:00 GMT), the Qatari foreign ministry says.

The 50 hostages, among about 240 taken by Hamas in their Oct. 7 raid on Israel, are expected to be released in batches, probably about a dozen a day, during the four-day ceasefire.

Those involved in the deal have described the break in hostilities as "a humanitarian pause". The pause will be extended by a day for each additional batch of 10 hostages released, Israel said in a statement.

The hostages are expected to be transported through Egypt, the only country apart from Israel to share a border with Gaza.

UK Museum Recognises Roman Emperor As Trans Woman

A UK museum has embraced inclusivity but sparked controversy by relabeling the third-century Roman emperor Elagabalus with female pronouns, based on historical accounts. North Hertfordshire Museum will now refer to emperor Elagabalus with female pronouns of she and her, BBC reported.

The museum said the decision was prompted by classical texts that allege the emperor once said, "Call me not Lord, for I am a Lady." The words were written by Cassius Dio, a well-known Roman historian and administrator.

The spokesperson for the museum said, "only polite and respectful to be sensitive to identifying pronouns for people in the past".

The museum owns a silver denarius minted in the reign of Elagabalus, who ruled Rome from 218AD until his assassination, aged 18, in 222AD, and the coin has been used in LGBT-themed displays, Telegraph reported. In displays featuring the coin, information about it and Elagabalus, the ruler will be referred to as she.

Elagabalus became a controversial figure over his short reign, developing a reputation for sexual promiscuity.

He was married five times- four times to women, and once to Hiercoles, a former slave and chariot driver.

Cassius Dio, a senator and contemporary of Elagabalus, writes in his historical chronicles mentioned that the emperor "was bestowed in marriage and was termed wife, mistress and queen".

Keith Hoskins, Liberal Democrat councillor and executive member for arts at the Lib Dem and Labour coalition-run North Herts Council, told the Telegraph, "Elagabalus most definitely preferred she pronoun, and as such this is something we reflect when discussing her in contemporary times.

"We try to be sensitive to identifying pronouns for people in the past, as we are for people in the present. It is only polite and respectful. We know that Elagabalus identified as a woman and was explicit about which pronouns to use, which shows that pronouns are not a new thing."

Bill Gates Says 3-Day Work Week Possible With AI

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates believes that technology will not replace humans, but it could make a 3-day work week possible. The billionaire shared his views while talking to South African comedian and writer Trevor Noah on his podcast 'What Now'.

The 68-year-old Microsoft cofounder said that AI will not be taking jobs but will "change it forever." In the 45-minute-long conversation, the billionaire talked about how AI and technology could change lives for good.

When Mr Noah asked about the threat of artificial intelligence to jobs, Mr Gates said there could one day be a time when humans "don't have to work so hard."

Mr Gates said, "If you eventually get a society where you only have to work three days a week, that's probably OK."

He even said there could exist a world where "machines can make all the food and the stuff."

The billionaire has highlighted both the risks and the benefits of AI in his previous interviews and blogs. In July, he addressed the risks of AI.

"I don't think AI's impact will be as dramatic as the Industrial Revolution, but it certainly will be as big as the introduction of the PC. Word processing applications didn't do away with office work, but they changed it forever," Mr Gates said at the time. "Employers and employees had to adapt, and they did."

He also pointed out the risks of AI, including "misinformation and deepfakes, security threats, changes to the job market, and the impact on education."

"This is not the first time a new technology has caused a big shift in the labour market. I don't think AI's impact will be as dramatic as the Industrial Revolution, but it certainly will be as big as the introduction of the PC," he wrote.

"Another thing that's clear to me is that the future of AI is not as grim as some people think or as rosy as others think. The risks are real, but I am optimistic that they can be managed," he added.

Why Was Rinku Singh's Last-Ball Six vs Australia Not Counted - Explained

India started the T20I series against Australia in some style as they notched a two-wicket win on Thursday. There was no shortage of thrill in the match. Courtesy Josh Inglis' 110, Australia notched a huge total of 208/3 in 20 overs. In reply, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan hit half-centuries as India cruised towards the target. However, both got out and it was left to Rinku Singh to take India over the line as India needed seven runs off six balls.

More drama ensued as India lost the wickets of Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh in the last over by Sean Abbott to go eight down. With India needing one off one ball, Rinku Singh hit a huge six to take India to win. However, the six was not counted and there was confusion over India's final score. The umpires then adjudged the delivery as no-ball. Since it was a no-ball, and India had got the required one run and had already won by its courtesy. Hence, the six was not counted. India ended on 209/8 in 19.5 overs.

Half-centuries by Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan helped India secure a two-wicket win over Australia in the first T20I of a five-match series at Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

This is India's highest T20I run-chase, outdoing chase of 208 against West Indies back in 2019.

India is 1-0 up in the series.

In the chase of 209, India started off well with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting a four and six in the first over, but a miscommunication with Ruturaj Gaikwad ran out the latter for zero. India was 11/1 in 0.5 overs.

Jaiswal looked to up the attack in the next over, but Matthew Short got his first T20I wicket, removing Jaiswal for 21 off 8 balls, with two fours and two sixes. India was 22/2 in 2.3 overs.

Ishan and Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper were the fresh pair. After a brief lull, they both started hitting shots. Pacer Sean Abbott went for 20 runs in the fifth over and was hit for a four and two sixes.

India reached the 50-run mark in 4.5 overs.

At the end of the powerplay, India was 63/2, with Suryakumar (26*) and Ishan (14*) unbeaten.

The ninth over pulled India back in the game big time, with young spinner Tanveer Sangha hit for two sixes and a four by Ishan. India reached the 100-run mark in 9.1 overs.

Halfway through the innings, India was 106/2, with Suryakumar (39*) and Suryakumar (40*) unbeaten.

Ishan reached his half-century, his fourth in T20Is in just 37 balls, with two fours and four sixes. The left-hander attempted to punish Sangha with a four and six. However, a third attempt to clear the ropes was caught by Short. Ishan walked back for 58 off 39 balls, with two fours and five sixes. India was 134/3 in 12.3 overs.

India reached the 150-run mark in 14.2 overs.

Tilak played some good shots but lost his wicket to Sangha after being caught by Stoinis at extra cover for 12. India was 154/4 in 14.5 overs.

A knuckle ball was delivered by Jason Behrendorff and Suryakumar skied it, got caught by Aaron Hardie. Surya went back for 80 off 42 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. India was 194/5 in 17.4 overs.

India reached the 200-run mark in 18.5 overs with the help of a four from Rinku Singh.

Chennai Police Files FIR Against Mansoor Ali Khan For Remark About Trisha

The Chennai police has filed an FIR against Tamil film actor Mansoor Ali Khan for his alleged distasteful and derogatory comments on southern star Trisha. The All Women Police Station at Thousand lights has booked him for sexual harassment and intent to outrage modesty of a woman. The action comes in the wake of a complaint by the National Women's Commission. Asked if he A police officer told NDTV "We would first send him a notice". In a recent media interaction that went viral, Mansoor Ali Khan expressed disappointment at the absence of bedroom scenes, a staple in his villainous roles, in the blockbuster film Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, starring leading actress Trisha.

His remarks have sparked outrage, particularly from Trisha herself, who, on X (earlier known as Twitter), condemned his comments as sexist and misogynistic. Trisha tweeted, "I will never share screen space with Mansoor Ali Khan. His remarks are not just disappointing but reflect a mindset that has no place in our industry." Joining Trisha in denouncing Mansoor Ali Khan, singer Chinmayi and actor Khushbu also expressed their disapproval.

In a video clip shared on WhatsApp groups, Khan stated, "They don't cast villains. He (Director Lokesh Kanagaraj) should speak for me too. They don't let us rape. I dropped the idea of speaking at the 'Leo' film function as others could think I am triggering clashes."

He added "I was so excited. Let me tell you here, When I was told I'd act with Trisha, I thought there would surely be bedroom scenes. I thought I can do like I had thrown Khushbu and Roja on the bed. What friend, is there a rape I've not done in 150 films ? Is there any outrage I've not done? Villains are not cast. They took Trisha in the hand to white snowy Kashmir like how Hanuman carried Chiranjeevi hill. They didn't show her at all and carried her back without her feet touching the ground."

Amidst the backlash, Mansoor Ali Khan has refused to apologise. He defended himself in a statement, asserting that his comments were taken out of context and manipulated, potentially linked to the release of his upcoming film and speculations about his political entry. He clarified that his remarks were meant to be light-hearted reflections on the changing portrayal of women in films compared to the past and that its not on an individual. He claims "I only spoke positively about Trisha that she was safely taken on air to Kashmir and returned. There is no scope to act with heroines unlike films of the past".

"Overconfidence Bhi Zyada...": Afridi On India's World Cup Final Loss

Former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi slammed Team India following their ODI World Cup 2023 loss against Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Speaking live on a Pakistan-based TV channel, Samaa TV, Afridi said that overconfidence led to Rohit Sharma's side's downfall in the tournament. He also said that after winning 10 matches in the tournament, overconfidence was too much in the team.

"Jab aap continue game jeete ja rahe ho toh overconfidence bhi zyada ho jati hai. Toh woh cheez aapko marwah deti hai (When you have won all the games continuously, the 'overconfidence' is too much. So, this could lead to their downfall)," Afridi told on Samaa TV.

Coming to the match, India bundled out on a score of 240 in 50 overs. On a tough batting surface, skipper Rohit Sharma (47 in 31 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes), Virat Kohli (54 in 63 balls, with four boundaries) and KL Rahul (66 in 107 balls, with one four) posted important knocks.

Mitchell Starc (3/55) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. Skipper Pat Cummins (2/34) and Josh Hazlewood (2/60) also bowled well. Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell got a wicket each.

While chasing 241 runs, India had the Aussies down at 47/3. Knocks from Travis Head (137 in 120 balls, with 15 fours and four sixes) and Marnus Labuschagne (58 in 110 balls, with four boundaries) left the Indian team without answers and guided them to a six-wicket win.

The World Cup finalists will now compete in a five-match T20I series which will begin on Thursday in Visakhapatnam.

Another Pandemic? Mystery Pneumonia Sweeps Through Chinese Schools

China, still reeling from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, now faces a new threat: a mysterious pneumonia outbreak sweeping through schools. This alarming situation, reminiscent of the early days of the COVID crisis, has led to a surge in hospitalizations, casting an ominous shadow over the country's healthcare system.

Hospitals in Beijing and Liaoning, 500 miles northeast, are struggling to cope with an influx of sick children, straining their resources to the breaking point. Local media reports suggest that school closures are imminent due to the outbreak. The affected children present with unusual symptoms, including lung inflammation and high fever, but noticeably lack the typical cough and other signs associated with flu, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses.

ProMed, an open-access surveillance platform that tracks worldwide disease outbreaks in humans and animals, issued an alert on Tuesday evening regarding an emerging epidemic of "undiagnosed pneumonia" particularly affecting children.

A ProMed alert issued in late December 2019 served as a critical early warning about a novel virus, subsequently identified as SARS-CoV-2, alerting a wide range of medical professionals and scientists, including high-ranking officials at the World Health Organization.

In an editor's note, ProMed said: "This report suggests a widespread outbreak of an undiagnosed respiratory illness... It is not at all clear when this outbreak started, as it would be unusual for so many children to be affected so quickly. The report does not say that any adults were affected, suggesting some exposure at the schools."

It is too early to project whether this could be another pandemic, but as a wise influenza virologist once said to me, "The pandemic clock is ticking; we just do not know what time it is."

Discussions are happening between Altman and at least one board member, Adam D'Angelo, the report said, adding that the former CEO could return as a director on a transitional board.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on a CNBC interview on Monday that he was open to staff staying at OpenAI or coming to the Windows maker. He said governance at the ChatGPT maker needed to change no matter where Altman ended up.

Kashmir Sees Tourist Boom, But Houseboats Struggle To Stay Afloat

Jammu and Kashmir is expected to see a record number of tourist arrivals this year but one of its standout attractions, the houseboat, is struggling to stay afloat. The number of houseboats in four key waterbodies in the Union Territory has more than halved in the past three decades, with many sinking, some others catching fire and several others just not being maintained. Strict pollution and sewage laws are also preventing the construction of new boats and major repairs on existing ones.

According to the Kashmir Houseboat Owners Association, the number of houseboats on the iconic Dal Lake, Nageen Lake, Chinar Bagh and Jhelum River has come down to just 750. The number was 2,000 in 1990, around the time that militancy reared its ugly head in the erstwhile state.

For tourists, a visit to Kashmir is incomplete without at least a night's stay in a houseboat and this was echoed by a couple from Gujarat, who were staying in one such boat in Dal Lake with their children.

NDTV spoke to Allena Modi and Bijal Bhai Modi, from Ahmedabad, who said the houseboat experience - their first - was like no other.

"Even if you visit all the places in Jammu and Kashmir, your trip will not be complete if you don't stay in a houseboat. We are staying in one at the Dal Lake and the boat - with its intricate woodwork, curtains and carpets - has made us feel connected to old Kashmir. This is something our children have not seen. This is the first time we are staying in a houseboat," said Ms Modi.

"We had already made a plan to stay here and it was part of our itinerary. Living in a houseboat for at least a night is a must. You get to experience Kashmiri traditions in a way that you can't in hotels. And, when you look out the window, you see the beautiful Dal Lake and the mountains surrounding it. After some time, you will see the Dal Lake frozen and tourists will get to enjoy that too," she added.

Glorious History

The idea of houseboats as floating resorts for tourists took hold in the 19th century after British businessman R Foster launched the Clermount houseboat on the western shores of the Dal Lake. He did so after he failed to buy land in the Valley due to laws that barred non-locals from owning land in Kashmir even during the British Raj.

The Butt's Clermount houseboats are still a favoured destination for diplomats, celebrities and foreign tourists, even as its seven-houseboat fleet is now reduced to three. The who's who from across the world, who visited Kashmir, have stayed here in the past 80 years and their photographs adorn the walls of the reception.

Manzoor Ahmad Butt, the owner of Butt's Clermount Houseboats, said, "An Englishman came and lived near the Nageen Lake in Srinagar. He liked Kashmir and wanted to buy land here to build a house so he could return every year. He approached his friend, the Maharaja, and requested permission, which was declined as per local laws. The Maharaja advised him to build a houseboat"

"The Maharaja wanted him to have a houseboat on water and nothing permanent on land,” he added.

These local laws, in some form, were in place until August 5, 2019, when the Centre revoked Article 370.

Since the Kashmir valley was dotted by picturesque water bodies, life and transportation on the water are as old as the Valley's known history. Boats in Kashmir have a Gujarati link as well, and Mughal Emperor Akbar improved the watercraft.

Hakim Sameer Hamdani, author and design director of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Kashmir, said "The early references we have are from medieval Sanskrit sources which speak of bathhouses on boats. But, then, as we move towards the late medieval and early modern period, the Sultanate period, there is a reference that Sultan Zain-ul-Abideen got sailors and boatmen from Gujarat who were well-versed in operating as well as crafting boats

"And when we come to the Mughal period, Akbar improved existing boats because the emperors and the courtiers liked to be on the Dal Lake and other lakes," he added.

Decline

Manzoor Pakhtoon, president, Kashmir Houseboat Owners Association, said the decreasing tourist numbers since the 90s contributed to the decline of houseboats and the supply has not increased despite the boom in recent years.

"Since 1990, the number of houseboats has been declining. Some sank, some caught fire and others are not being maintained. For a long time, there was little tourism and people had no money to maintain the houseboats. Some got disinterested and left the business," Mr Pakhtoon said.

"There are only 750 houseboats in the Nageen Lake, Dal Lake, Jhelum River and Chinar Bagh. The figure was 2,000 in 1990. Some deluxe-class houseboats have been maintained well and are seen in the Dal and Nageen lakes. In the other two water bodies, they are finished. Most of them couldn't keep pace with market demand and failed to provide modern facilities to tourists," he rued.

Other members of the association said some owners who want to repair their boats can't do so in time because of delays in getting official permissions and the limited availability of the expensive Cedarwood.

A ban on making new houseboats and undertaking large-scale repairs was put in place by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court after complaints that the vessels were polluting Dal Lake in the absence of a proper sewage treatment system. The government came up with plans for sewage treatment plants for houseboats twice, but they failed to see the light of day. A fresh effort is now being made to address the issue.

Fire is also a huge factor. In the past year, over a dozen deluxe houseboats caught fire in the  Nageen and Dal lakes. Three tourists from Bangladesh died after a fire broke out in a houseboat last week and spread to four other vessels.

Truce Deal In Israel-Hamas War In "Final Stage": What We Know So Far

Palestinian sources and mediator Qatar said Tuesday a deal to free hostages abducted from Israel in exchange for a Palestinian prisoners release, and a truce in the Gaza war is 'close'.

There was no immediate response from Israel, which has vowed to crush Hamas in response to its unprecedented October 7 attack which killed around 1,200 people in Israel, according to official figures.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Monday that until the estimated 240 hostages are freed, there will be no letup in Israel's offensive on the Hamas-ruled territory, which has killed more than 13,300 people, according to the Hamas authorities.

Qatar, key mediator alongside Egypt in efforts to secure the deal, said Tuesday negotiations were at "a critical and final stage".

Here is what we know:

- 'We are close' to deal -

Early Tuesday, Qatar-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said in a brief statement posted online: "We are close to reaching a deal on a truce."

Hamas and Islamic Jihad sources said details of the agreement would be announced officially by Qatar and other mediators.

"We are at the closest point we ever had been in reaching an agreement," Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said later Tuesday, adding negotiations were at a "critical and final stage".

- Up to 100 hostages, 300 Palestinian prisoners -

Two sources close to the tentative deal have said that between 50 and 100 civilian hostages would be released, but no military personnel.

In exchange, Israel would release from its prisons 300 Palestinians, among them women and children.

The transfer would span several days, with 10 hostages and 30 Palestinians prisoners released each day.

- Stumbling block -

But the same sources said Israel had insisted that captive soldiers should also be released if they are related to a civilian abductee freed by the militants -- despite Hamas objections.

"Qatar and Egypt are currently working with the US administration to resolve that issue," the sources said, adding that only then would a date for a truce be announced.

- Tentative five-day truce -

According to the same sources, the deal includes a "complete ceasefire" on the ground for five days, with Israel allowed to fly sorties over northern Gaza for 18 hours a day.

The deal also provides for between 100 and 300 trucks of food and medical aid, as well as fuel, to enter Gaza, the sources said.

- Families disappointed -

Relatives of the hostages met on Monday evening with Netanyahu, who told them: "We will not stop fighting until we bring our hostages home" and "destroy" Hamas.

But the families expressed frustration after the meeting.

"We wanted to hear about a deal and that return of the abductees is a priority among the war objectives. We didn't hear that," said Udi Goren, whose cousin is among the hostages.

- US 'hopeful' -

On Monday, US President Joe Biden indicated a deal was near.

"I believe so," Biden said at the White House when asked by a reporter whether a hostage deal was near.

His national security spokesman John Kirby later said: "We believe we're closer than we've ever been, so we're hopeful."

- Red Cross -

Hope for a deal grew after the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has helped facilitate past prisoner exchanges and hostage releases between Israel and the Palestinians, met with the Hamas chief in Doha on Monday as well as with Qatari officials.

The ICRC said in a statement it was "insisting that our teams be allowed to visit the hostages to check on their welfare and deliver medications, and for the hostages to be able to communicate with their families."
