8th Pay Commission Soon? A Guide To Your Estimated Salary Hike And Allowances

The long-awaited 8th Pay Commission is set to bring significant hikes in salaries for central government employees and pensioners. With a fitment factor likely around 1.96, minimum basic pay could nearly double, while total pay including Dearness Allowance (DA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA) is expected to rise substantially.

Even if the full implementation of the 8th Pay Commission extends until 2027, the benefits will reportedly be effective from January 1, 2026. Over 50 lakh central employees and around 65 lakh pensioners are expected to receive arrears once the new pay structure is introduced.

What Is The Fitment Factor?

A key component of determining salaries under the 8th Pay Commission is the fitment factor. This multiplier is used to calculate a new basic salary by multiplying an employee's current basic pay.

To understand, under the 6th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary was Rs 7,000.

The 7th Pay Commission applied a fitment factor of 2.57, raising the minimum basic salary to Rs 18,000.

For the 8th Pay Commission, reports suggest the fitment factor could range from 1.92 to 2.86, with 1.96 being a likely possibility.

How Much Will Salaries Increase?

Assuming a fitment factor of 1.96, the minimum basic salary of Rs 18,000 could rise to Rs 35,280 for Level-1 employees. This does not include DA, but House HRA will be added depending on the city of posting.

The formula to calculate the new basic salary is:

Old Basic Salary x 1.96 = Basic Salary under 8th Pay Commission

Using this formula, basic salary increases can be estimated for all levels, from Level 1 to Level 18.

Total Salary Calculation

Let's consider a Level-9 central government employee as an example:

  • Current basic salary: Rs 53,100
  • Current DA (58% of basic): Rs 30,798
  • HRA for metro cities like Delhi (27% of basic): Rs 14,337

Total current salary (Basic + DA + HRA) = Rs 98,235

Under the 8th Pay Commission:

New basic salary: Rs 1,04,076
DA reset: 0% = Rs 0
HRA (27% of basic): Rs 28,100.52

Total salary (Basic + DA + HRA) = Rs 1,32,177

Note: that these calculations are estimates, as the official formula has not yet been finalised.

Arshad Nadeem's Coach Banned For Life By Pakistan's Athletics Federation

Salman Iqbal, the long serving coach of Pakistan's top athlete Arshad Nadeem, was on Sunday banned for life by the country's Athletics Federation for violating the constitution of the Punjab Athletics Association, where he holds the position of President. Under the life ban, Iqbal cannot take part in any athletics activities nor coach or hold office at any level. The violations the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation (PAAF) has accused Iqbal of committing by holding elections of the Punjab body occured back in August.

An inquiry committee was formed in mid-September and it recommended the ban on Iqbal on October 10, a day after his reply to the PSB came out.

The decision appears to be linked to the recent crisp reply Iqbal had sent to the state-run Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) when they asked him to explain Nadeem's poor show in the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. PSB also demanded to know details about the expenses incurred on the javelin thrower's training and travel.

Iqbal, who has been Arshad's mentor and coach for the last few years, shocked everyone by disclosing that the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation had for the last one year or so disassociated itself from anything to do with Nadeem.

Iqbal apparently also ruffled feathers when he said in his reply that he had to seek financial assistance from a friend to ensure that Pakistan's top athlete was able to train in South Africa apart from help him complete his rehab after sustaining a calf muscle injury.

Bihar Man Wanted To Marry Girlfriend, So He Set Second Wife Ablaze

A man in Bihar wanted to marry his girlfriend, but his second wife objected. Angered by this, he doused her in petrol, released LPG from a cylinder, and set her ablaze, officials said on Saturday.

Vikas Kumar, from a village in Nalanda district, had married Sunita Devi (25) five years ago. Sunita's father said it was only after the wedding that they realised Kumar had already been married once and had not divorced his first wife.

Kumar's family managed to convince Sunita to live with them, and she had two children, both of whom died shortly after they were born. Kumar then began talking about marrying his girlfriend and this led to frequent arguments between him and Sunita, who then left to live with her parents.

Before the Durga Puja festival, which began last month, Kumar went to Sunita's house and asked her to return with him.

Sunita's brother said they received a call from her around 1 am on Saturday, saying Kumar had thrown petrol on her and locked her in the courtyard. He had then opened the valves on the cooking gas stove and thrown a lit matchstick. Sunita told them she would not survive, an official said, adding her phone was switched off after that.

By the time the family reached the village, Kumar and his family were planning to cremate Sunita's body. They fled when they saw Sunita's family approaching.

"A team reached the spot and started an investigation. A forensic team has collected samples. The body has been handed over to the woman's family after a postmortem and her in-laws are on the run," said Station House Officer Anil Kumar Pandey.

Madhya Pradesh Worker Collapses, Dies While Employer Scrolls Through Phone

A 45-year-old worker in Madhya Pradesh's Agar Malwa district died of a heart attack while his employer sat just a few feet away scrolling through his phone instead of helping. The tragic incident happened on Monday at the Tirupati Traders in Susner.

Rafiq Khan, who worked at the shop, suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed on his chair while working. For nearly six minutes, Khan struggled to breathe and writhed in pain. However, none of the people present, including the shop owner, stepped forward to help.

CCTV Footage Shows Lack Of Humanity

The CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral. The video showed Khan gasping for breath on his chair, while the owner looked at him occasionally but continued using his phone.

At no point during the duration of the footage was the owner seen getting up or attempting to provide any aid to Khan.

By the time the 45-year-old man was taken to a hospital, doctors declared him dead.

'Victim Forced To Lift Loads Beyond His Capacity'

Khan's family, devastated and enraged by the tragedy, reached the Susner Police Station, demanding justice.

With them, hundreds of locals gathered at the police station, calling the incident not just an accident but a death caused by criminal negligence and a lack of humanity.

The family alleged that Khan was forced to lift heavy loads beyond his capacity by the shop's owner and his son, which triggered the heart attack.

Qualcomm Chief To NDTV On Company's Plans In India, AI And 6G

The Indian telecom story is one which has seen amazing opportunities in the last few years. From 2G to 3G, 4G and 5G, what does the future hold? Behind all the technology is another story of hard work, design and manufacturing - and that's where the tech company Qualcomm comes into the Indian picture.

Qualcomm President Cristiano R Amon in an interview with NDTV's Vishnu Som said 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI (artificial intelligence).

"We started with 2G... 3G was about connecting to the Internet, 4G was about broadband and making the phone into a computer, 5G was about making sure that everyone could have unlimited data rates... 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI," Amon said.

What 6G is going to do, he said, besides providing faster and cheaper communication, is to deploy "sensing networks" which is going to be incredibly important for the age of AI.

"We are now in the era of networks that understand the context of communications and a lot of data is going to be important for AI. That leads into this whole conversation about how AI is evolving and I think communications is going to evolve as well and that's what 6G is all about," the Qualcomm chief said.

To a question about how AI services that people commonly use today will evolve in the next five years, he said it's definitely going to be faster five years from now.

"I think some of the revolutions are about to start right now. When you think about the history of computers, I can probably bet the computer that you use the most is your smartphone and is your inseparable device. What's happening is AI gets developed in a data centre and gets into commercial applications... That's going to be in your phone, on your PC, in your car, in your future smart device," Amon said.

"We're starting to see how AI is fundamentally changing those computers because one of the many capabilities of AI is to understand us. We don't have to learn how to use the computer anymore. The AI understands what we say, understands what we write, understands what we see. I think we're starting to see the beginning of what we call agentic experience, agents that are going to be the new apps. We're going to see that happen in all the devices," he said.

On India

Amon said it is all about "100 per cent empowerment", referring to India's technological base that common people use, such as UPI.

"It's well understood, if you empower people with connectivity, with computing, with access to knowledge via the internet, you create economic activity. You create opportunity. I think we have seen that. We have seen the transformation, I would dare to say, in the transformation of India to where India is today and where India is going, in the connectivity and smartphones and the mobile Internet. It was one important component among many others," Amon told NDTV.

"I think the same needs to be applied when we think about AI. We should be working very hard to democratise this technology and make sure that everyone has access to it..."

The Qualcomm chief said he was "very privileged to have a great conversation" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I'm always inspired by the Prime Minister. It's my third meeting I had with him. But what is interesting about this meeting in particular is the vision for India in the India AI Mission and the India Semiconductor Mission. There is a great intersection with Qualcomm. Look, we have been in India for two decades. There's so many things we have been doing in India. We're very proud of our partnerships here in all of the sectors from automotive to PC to smartphone," he said.

Work Culture Difference Between India And Europe Shocks Redditor, Post Viral

An employee working for a European firm has gone viral on social media for sharing a post about the work culture difference between India and Europe. In a now-viral Reddit post titled, "Work Culture Shock: India vs Europe", the user posted a screenshot of a Teams conversation where the European colleagues nonchalantly explained their plans of being absent from work.

One of the workers said they were going to take a leave on Monday, followed by work from home (WFH),/personal time for the rest of the week.

"Good morning! Heads up on my schedule next week. I am off Monday, then WFH/personal time the rest of the week. I have my 3 kids, as my wife is out of town. I'll keep the team posted if I cannot attend individual meetings," wrote the employee, while another simply informed: "Sorry team, I cannot make today."

The Indian employee who posted the screenshot asked: "Can we Indians post like this in Teams?"

'Culture difference'

As the post gained significant traction online, a section of social media users marvelled at the simplicity of communication in Europe, whilst others pointed out how such an arrangement would not work in India.

"It's not just a work culture difference, it's the actual culture difference. Indians are spoon-fed and fear-driven from the beginning, not interest-driven," said one user while another added: "I work for a UK-based company, have a British manager and this is exactly how we work. Don't even have to give a reason for taking the leaves."

A third commented: "See the reason why the toxic culture is so prevalent in India because a lot of Indians are enablers. It's the harshest truth. Many people are simply people pleasers and they think going the extra mile, working with fever and idk what not will gain them a positive image."

A fourth said: "Europeans can say that because their labour laws genuinely protect employees. The less said about Indian laws, the better."

Afghan Minister Sparks Outrage With 'Ban' On Women Journalists At Press Meet

A press conference by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi has caused outrage because no women were allowed to attend the event.

Muttaqi is a part of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the group is known for the restrictions it imposes on women, essentially barring them from working. The Taliban's human rights record and the possibility of terror groups getting a safe haven in Afghanistan have been some of the factors which have made India cautious in its engagement with the group.

Muttaqi, who arrived in India on Thursday, held talks with Jaishankar on Friday. The meeting, seen as a big reset of ties, saw India announcing that the technical mission in Kabul would be upgraded to an embassy, which was welcomed by the Afghanistan foreign minister.

"India is fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan. I am pleased to announce the upgrading of India's Technical Mission to the status of embassy," Jaishankar said.

A press conference by Muttaqi in the afternoon at Afghanistan's embassy, however, saw women being stopped from attending. NDTV raised the issue with security personnel at the embassy, but they did not relent.

Several journalists then took to social media to express their anger and also pointed out that all women reporters had respected the dress code. Many social media users also questioned the action.

Terror Remark

The Afghanistan foreign minister said during the press conference that his country does not give any space to terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which have carried out several attacks against India, and urged Pakistan to do the same.

"Not a single one of them is in Afghanistan. Not an inch of land is controlled by them in the country... Let other countries also act against such terror groups like Afghanistan did for peace," he said, in an unmistakable reference to Pakistan.

Blaming Pakistan for a recent attack in the country, Muttaqi said no one should have a problem with peace in the country.

"Afghanistan looks at India as a close friend. Afghanistan wants relations based on mutual respect, trade, and people-to-people relations," said the minister.

5 Killed, Many Trapped As House Collapses After Powerful Blast In Ayodhya

At least five people died and several others were injured when a house collapsed following a loud explosion at a village in Ayodhya this evening. Several people are still feared trapped under the debris and rescue work is in progress.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked senior officials to go to the spot, ensure proper medical treatment for the injured, and oversee the rescue and relief operations. The injured have been sent to the district hospital.

The blast had sounded alarm bells, coming a day after a scooter blast in Kanpur in which eight people were injured. But initial reports indicated that the blast could have been a firecracker
explosion. The police now say it could have been a gas cylinder blast.

A forensic team has reached the spot. The District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police are present at the scene.

"It seems it was a gas cylinder blast or a cooker blast in a kitchen. but we can be definite only after forensic tests," said Nikhil Tikaram Funde, the District Magistrate of Ayodhya.

"The news of the death of 5 people due to the blast in Ayodhya is extremely heartbreaking. Immediate arrangements should be made for the proper treatment of the injured, and an investigation into the matter should be conducted," read a post by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

"Attackers Said They Were Didi's Men": BJP MP On Assault By Mob In Bengal

Khagen Murmu, the BJP MP attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress goons, has vehemently refuted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's assertion that the locals at the flood-hit Jalpaiguri area where he had gone two days ago to distribute aid, had attacked him. Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were set upon by a group of men, who, he said, were brought from other places, including Delhi, to block the entry of the BJP leaders.

Videos of the attack on the two leaders and images of a profusely bleeding Murmu have been widely circulated on social media. Describing the attack as a "law and order situation," Mamata Banerjee had said, "I don't want to politicise it. But if you take 30-40 cars inside a village that has lost everything, what can you expect?"

Lying on his hospital bed, Murmu questioned how big a convoy can four MPs and a similar number of MLAs take. "How many cars were there? There was one MP or one MLA in each car, along with a few people from our district. So how many cars could have been there? They saw a 40-car convoy. They did not see that so much blood was shed," he told NDTV's Padmaja Joshi in an exclusive interview.

Describing how the attack took place, he said the crowd had accosted them where they had gone.

"They were saying, 'We are from the TMC, we are Didi's men. We are here. Why have you come? The BJP has no business here," he said. Unnerved by the mob, most of the leaders got away, but there was no space for Murmu and Ghosh in the boat.

"They attacked us...  They pushed us and beat us, threw stones at our car, breaking the front and the back windshields," he said, pointing out that the attack has been well-documented.

The injuries he sustained would take time to heal, he said. "Doctors said another couple of months," he said. "A stone hurled inside my car hit me on the cheekbone, breaking it. I could even lose my eye, doctors said," he added.

The attack has become a huge flashpoint between Bengal's ruling party and the BJP. Even though two men have been arrested, the row continues.

Today, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose gave the Chief Minister a 24-hour 'ultimatum'. Banerjee must restore law and order immediately or face possible constitutional action, he told NDTV.

Chinese Woman Swallows 8 Live Frogs To Treat Back Pain. This Happens Next

In a shocking case, an 82-year-old Chinese woman swallowed eight small live frogs believing it would alleviate her lower back pain caused by a herniated disc as she relied on a folklore remedy, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Unfortunately, this unconventional method led to severe abdominal pain, and the woman, surnamed Zhang, ended up hospitalised in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

"My mother ate eight live frogs. Now the sharp pain has made her unable to walk," her son told the doctor as quoted in the report.

As per the report, the elderly woman had suffered from a herniated disc for a long time. She asked her family to catch some live frogs for her when someone told her that swallowing them could help relieve her lower back pain.

Her mistake was to believe this bizarre theory, as there's no medical evidence supporting this claim.

Meanwhile, her digestive system collapsed after swallowing live frogs, with parasites like sparganum infecting her body. She experienced intense pain, making it hard to walk.

She was admitted to a hospital in Hangzhou, and doctors conducted a physical examination on her. The medical experts found a dramatic increase in oxyphil cells, which indicates many illnesses, such as parasitic infections and blood disorders.

Doctors also conducted a few detailed tests. "Swallowing frogs has damaged the patient's digestive system and resulted in some parasites being present in her body, including sparganum," a doctor from the hospital informed the media.

After two weeks of treatment, she was discharged from the hospital.

'Admire Lawyer's Courage': BJP Leader's Shocker On Chief Justice Shoe Attack

Even as the attack on the Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has drawn criticism from all quarters, the lawyer's attempt to throw his shoe at the top judge of the country has received praise from a BJP leader.

Bhaskar Rao, Karnataka BJP leader and former Bengaluru Commissioner, said that he "admires" the courage of the lawyer for taking a stand and "living by it".

In a breach of decorum, the elderly lawyer threw a shoe at the Chief Justice during a court proceeding. The shoe did not reach the bench, and the man was caught and escorted out by security personnel present in the court.

The lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, was suspended by the Bar Council of India (BCI) hours after the incident.

Kishore, however, showed "no regret". He posted a screenshot of an article on the bar council's action against him and captioned it, "No regret, no sorrow, no repentance".

Rao's remark was in response to this post on X.

"Even if it is legally and terribly Wrong, I admire your courage, at your age, to take a stand and live by it, irrespective of consequences," he wrote in the comment section of Kishore's post.

His remark drew sharp criticism from Congress leader Mansoor Khan. "Even if it's legally and terribly wrong, you admire his courage? Coming from a former IPS officer, this is shameful. You once upheld the law; now you stand with someone who insulted the Chief Justice of India. What a fall," he wrote in a response to Rao's comment.

Earlier today, Kishore justified his action and said that he was hurt by the Chief Justice's remarks during the hearing of a plea seeking restoration of the structure of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple in Madhya Pradesh's Khajuraho.

"I did not do it; God did. The Chief Justice of India mocked Sanatan Dharma. This was the Almighty's order, a reaction to an action," he said.

Last month, a bench led by Chief Justice Gavai dismissed the petition plea seeking directions to reconstruct and reinstall the idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple. The temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho complex.

"This is purely publicity interest litigation.... Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation," the Chief Justice had said.

His remarks had drawn ire on social media. Taking note of the criticism, he later said that he respects "all religions".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday strongly condemned the attack on the Chief Justice and said that it had "angered every Indian".

Several other leaders across party lines also strongly condemned the incident. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has issued a firm resolution condemning the conduct of the advocate who disrupted proceedings in the courtroom of the Chief Justice of India.

Chakravarthy Reveals Gambhir's Reply When Asked About ODI Selection

Unarguably one of the pillars of India's T20I team, Varun Chakravarthy played a pivotal role in their triumph at the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2025. Varun, a mystery spinner, has worked with head coach Gautam Gambhir for a long time. The two were together as player and mentor when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in the 2024 season. With Gambhir as his coach in the Indian national team, Varun enjoyed success in the Asia Cup, becoming a key wicket-taker in the bowling unit. However, the player is yet to take his career beyond the shortest format, with chances in ODI cricket being limited while Tests aren't even in sight.

Answering a query by NDTV on the sidelines of the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai on Tuesday, Chakravarthy spoke about the conversations he had with coach Gambhir about his ODI career. During the chat, Chakravarthy revealed that Gambhir has advised him to bat higher in the batting order while playing domestic tournaments, and also try to bowl longer spells.

"Basically, the conversations were around bowling longer spells. Because in T20, you maximum bowl two overs back-to-back. But in ODI, you have to bowl five to six overs back-to-back, which I did work on and I was able to do it in the Champions Trophy," Chakravarthy said.

"Nothing much and definitely, he wants me to bat a little more up the order in the domestic circuit and improve on my batting," he added.

When asked about his ambitions in Test cricket, Chakravarthy said that he is open to play in all three formats for India and is preparing himself for the same.

"It's again selection. I would like to play every match India is playing but it's up to the selectors," he responded to the query.

Chakravarthy also spoke about Gambhir, the coach, describing him as a 'spartan' who always wants to go for the kill.

"I have already worked with him in the IPL and we won that IPL, so nothing new to me because I have already been around him. But definitely one thing which I can say about him is he brings a 'Spartan' mentality to the team where there is no option of losing, you just have to bring your best and give everything on the ground and later on, whatever happens, happens. But when he is around, there is no mediocrity, you can't be mediocre in the field, that's what I feel," he said.

KBC 17: Big B Recites Famous Zanjeer Dialogue, Javed Akhtar Praises Him

Kaun Banega Crorepati has been going strong ever since it returned for its 17th season. Hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the quiz-based reality show continues to welcome contestants eager to win impressive prize money.

In the latest promo of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, actor Farhan Akhtar and his father, screenwriter Javed Akhtar, were the honorary guests who took the hot seat. This upcoming episode would be a special occasion as  Amitabh Bachchan would be celebrating his 83rd birthday on October 11.

The promo began with Amitabh Bachchan greeting Farhan and Javed Akhtar warmly before cutting a cake with them. But the show-stealer moment arrived when Big B recreated an iconic dialogue from his blockbuster 1973 film Zanjeer.

With his signature charm and commanding presence, Amitabh Bachchan recites, “Jab tak bethne ko naa kaha jaaye khade raho, yeh police thana hai, tumhare baap ka ghar nahi (Until you are told to sit, keep standing. This is a police station, not your father's house).”

Watching the Bollywood megastar's perfectly effortless dialogue delivery, Javed Akhtar appeared impressed. Farhan too applauded in admiration, while the audience erupted in loud cheers and applause.

Watch the full video here:

Zanjeer, directed by Prakash Mehra, was written by the legendary duo Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. Besides Amitabh Bachchan, this crime action drama also featured his wife, Jaya Bachchan, Pran, Ajit Khan, and Bindu in crucial roles. Big B slipped into the shoes of Inspector Vijay, a tough and honest police officer, in this movie.

Amitabh Bachchan and Javed Akhtar's association dates back to the 1970s. Javed Akhtar and Salim Merchant co-wrote several films together that shaped Big B's popular “angry young man” persona at a time when romantic heroes were ruling the film industry. Some of these movies include Deewaar, Sholay, Trishul, and Don

Kaun Bangea Crorepati 17 premiered on August 11. The show airs on Sony TV from Monday to Friday at 9 pm. It is also available for streaming on the Sony LIV.

'Gill Didn't Want Captaincy, BCCI Pressurised Him': Kaif Drops Bombshell

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif believes that Shubman Gill was pressurised into becoming the ODI captain. In a decision that divided opinions, Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as the skipper ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Australia. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the team management were looking to give Gill enough time to settle down as captain in time for the 2027 ODI World Cup. As a result, Gill is currently the Test and ODI captain for the Indian cricket team while serving as the vice-captain of the T20I side. Kaif warned against 'overburdening' a young player like Gill and even hinted that selectors, including Agarkar, forced him to take the captaincy.

"This was on expected lines, but I felt this would happen after the 2027 World Cup. The guy has quality, and he's also worked on his fitness. He had a realistic chance of playing the 2027 World Cup. However, the load falls on Gill. He's getting all of it in a hurry. It could also lead to a loss. When you get so much in such a short time, it could backfire," Kaif said in a video posted on YouTube.

"My point is that don't overburden him. He captains in Tests, bats at No. 4. He was made the vice-captain in the Asia Cup – will take over when Suryakumar Yadav steps aside. Now you've made him the ODI captain. I feel everything is being done in a hurry. A player never asks for captaincy. Everyone knows that he didn't want it. You can't demand it, but everyone seems to like him a lot and considers him a captain for the future. The selectors, including Ajit Agarkar, have pressurised him."

Rohit was included in the squad for the Australia ODIs but he will not have any leadership role in the side.

Indian Dental Student, Working Part-Time At US Gas Station, Shot Dead

A 27-year-old Indian student has reportedly been shot dead in Dallas, US. Chandrashekar Pole, who was from Hyderabad, was working at a gas station Friday night when he was killed by an unidentified gunman, his family said, urging the government to help bring his body back from the US.

Pole had moved to the US in 2023 for higher studies after finishing his bachelor's in dental surgery back in Hyderabad. He completed his master's degree in the US six months ago and had been looking for a full-time placement while working part-time at the gas station.

"We learned about his death from his friend's parents, who visited us and shared our grief. We request the central and state governments to ensure the safety of Indians and bring my son's body back home as soon as possible," Pole's mother Sunitha told news agency ANI.

The Consulate General of India (CGI) in Houston, which oversees Texas, said it is in touch with Pole's family and following up on the probe into his death with the local authorities.

"Consulate General of India, Houston, deeply condoles the tragic death of Mr Chandrasekhar Pole, an Indian student from Hyderabad, who was killed in a shooting incident Denton, Texas. We are in touch with the family and extending all possible assistance. Local authorities are investigating the incident, and we are following up closely with them," it said.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy assured all help to the grieving family in the repatriation of their son's body. "The death of Pole Chandrasekhar, a student from LB Nagar, in a shooting incident by miscreants in the US has caused deep shock and grief. I pray to God that his soul may find peace, and express my profound condolences to his family members," said Reddy.

"The government will stand by Chandrasekhar's family. We will provide all possible assistance to bring his mortal remains back to his hometown," the Chief Minister added.

Reports suggest the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office is yet to issue a death certificate, which is necessary to initiate the repatriation process.

BRS MLA Sudhir Reddy and former minister T Harish Rao visited the student's home in Hyderabad and met his family on Saturday.

"The pain that the parents are going through, knowing that their son, who they believed would reach great heights, is no more, is heart-wrenching to witness," Rao said in an online post, extending condolences to the family. "We, on behalf of BRS, demand that the state government take initiative and make efforts to bring Chandra Shekhar's mortal remains to his hometown as quickly as possible."

The Dallas incident has renewed focus on the safety concerns of international students working part-time jobs in the US, especially those working late hours.

Earlier in January, a 26-year-old student from Telangana was shot dead by unidentified persons in Connecticut, US. Another man from Ranga Reddy was found dead with bullet wounds in the US earlier this year. Last month, a 30-year-old techie from Mahabubnagar district was shot dead by the police in California after he allegedly stabbed his roommate.

Video: Noida Residents Rattled After Cobra Takes Elevator Ride

It was not quite the kind of passenger anyone expected in the lift of a high-rise society in Noida, but there it was, a cobra, hood flared, writhing on the floor.

Residents of the Golden Palm Society in Sector 168 got the fright of their lives on Sunday when they discovered the reptile lounging in the elevator.

According to witnesses, a few residents had been waiting for the lift when it arrived with the unexpected occupant -- a full-grown cobra. What followed was panic and a frantic call to the society's maintenance team.

Armed with makeshift tools, the society's maintenance staff managed to trap the cobra safely inside a garbage bin. The snake was later released into a nearby open area.

But the encounter has left residents deeply uneasy. The residents said that if a snake can ride the lift, it can go anywhere -- the gym, the lobby, even inside flats. Parents say children are now too frightened to take the elevator alone.

Reports suggest that snakes have been spotted in the society's premises before, possibly slithering in from the green patches nearby.

Cough Syrup, Then More Sickness And Death: Shell-Shocked Families Try To Cope

For the families of the children who died in Chhindwara, compensation means little. What is Rs 4 lakh when your child is gone? What is government aid when you've already sold your home, your jewellery, and your dreams to keep a heartbeat going?

After days of denial, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for each of the 11 children who died after consuming Coldrif Cough Syrup.

The government will also bear the full cost of treatment for those still fighting for their lives in hospitals.

But for the parents in Parasia, the wounds are beyond repair. Many have lost not just their children but everything they owned trying to save them.

He Sold His Auto to Save His Child

Yasin Khan, a 30-year-old auto driver from Parasia, has not slept for several nights. His three-year-old son, Usaid, was his world. On August 31, Usaid developed a mild fever and cough. The family took him to Dr. Aman Siddiqui, he prescribed Coldrif Syrup.

"After the first few doses, my son started vomiting," Yasin recalled. "His eyes swelled up, his urine stopped, and he began crying in pain. We rushed him to Chhindwara, then to Nagpur. Doctors there said his kidneys were failing."

Usaid was put on dialysis. His father sold his only means of livelihood -- his auto-rickshaw -- to pay the hospital bills. The family spent over Rs 4 lakh in a desperate attempt to save him. "I thought if I could save him, I could buy another auto some day," Yasin said softly. "But now there's no child, no work, and no hope".

As if the cruelty of fate wasn't enough, while Usaid was being treated in Nagpur, their home's roof collapsed in the rain. Neighbours covered it with plastic sheets. When the couple returned with their son's body, water was seeping into every corner of the house.

"We came home with his body," his mother said, her voice breaking. "Everything was gone the roof, the money, and our son."

He Mortgaged His Land, and Still Lost His Child

Prakash Yaduvanshi sits in a dimly lit two-room house in Parasia, staring at a framed photograph of his son Devansh, aged seven.

He spent Rs 7 lakh on Devansh's treatment -- money he didn't have. He mortgaged his small farm, pawned his wife's jewellery, and borrowed from everyone he knew.

"I'm a paralytic patient," he said, holding up his trembling right hand. "My wife has two operations pending. We were already struggling. When my son fell sick, I thought it was just a cold. But the doctor gave him the syrup, and his condition got worse and worse," he said.

For 15 days, Devansh could neither eat nor drink. His body began to swell, his kidneys failed, and dialysis became his only chance.

The mother remembered every moment.

"The first dialysis lasted one-and-a-half hours. The next day, three hours. Then five. But he was slipping away from us. On the last day, the doctor said we have done all we could," she said.

The family has nothing left now. Prakash said they will go to the High Court.

For Kabir, The Diagnosis Came Too Late

In Betul district's Amla block, 4-year-old Kabir died on September 8. His father Kamlesh, a small farmer from Kalmeshwar, had taken him to Dr Praveen Soni in Parasia after the child developed a mild cough.
Dr Soni prescribed Coldrif Syrup. When Kabir's condition worsened, Kamlesh returned to the doctor, who referred him elsewhere. By the time another hospital diagnosed kidney failure, it was too late.

Kabir was taken to Nagpur, then to Bhopal. He died during treatment.

"I mortgaged my land for Rs 2.5 lakh," Kamlesh told NDTV. "I thought money could save him. But money ran out before his breath did," he added.

In Parasia's narrow lanes, grief hangs heavy. Fathers sit in silence, mothers clutch clothes that still smell of their children.

"We don't want money," said Usaid's mother, tears streaking her face. "We want justice for every child who took that poison thinking it was medicine," she added.

Drums, Bikes And Conservatism: The Making Of Japan's First Woman PM

Sanae Takaichi has been elected as the head of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), placing her in line to become the nation's first woman prime minister. She defeated Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former leader Junichiro Koizumi, in a run-off on Saturday after no candidate secured a majority in the initial round. A parliamentary vote to choose the next prime minister is expected on October 15.

A Conservative Figure In A Male-Dominated Arena

At 64, Takaichi has long been associated with the right wing of the LDP. Women remain vastly under-represented in Japanese politics. Only about 15% of the powerful lower house are female, and just two women serve as prefectural governors. While some hoped her election might signal change, many observers are sceptical.

Yuki Tsuji, a Tokai University professor who specialises in gender and politics, said Takaichi "has no interest in women's rights or gender equality policies." She has historically opposed proposals designed to strengthen women's roles in society.

Gender Views And Personal Health Struggles

Takaichi has consistently supported the LDP's traditional view of women as mothers and wives. She has pushed back against same-sex marriage, female succession to the imperial throne, and legislation allowing married couples to use different surnames.

Yet she has also spoken about her own struggles with menopause, advocating that men be better educated about female health so women can receive greater support at work and in school.

A Long Political Career

First elected from her hometown of Nara in 1993, Takaichi has since held several key posts, including economic security, internal affairs, and gender equality.

She has described Margaret Thatcher as a political role model and strongly aligns with Shinzo Abe's conservative vision.

From Drums To Politics

Takaichi was a heavy-metal drummer and an enthusiastic motorbike rider. Today, she champions policies such as increased defence spending, nuclear fusion research, stronger cybersecurity, fiscal stimulus for growth, and tighter immigration rules.

Foreign Policy Hawk

Takaichi is widely regarded as hawkish on foreign affairs. She is a revisionist on Japan's wartime history and makes regular visits to the Yasukuni Shrine – an act that angers neighbouring countries. According to AP, she has avoided detailing her immediate agenda if she takes office, but she is considered tough on China and cautious about South Korea.

Her hardline stance may complicate the ruling coalition with the centrist Komeito party, though she has indicated a willingness to collaborate with far-right groups.

Employee Exposes 'Toxic Reality' Of Government Banking Job: 'Sold A Lie'

A government bank employee has revealed the 'toxic' reality of the job, stating people had been 'sold a lie' about the security and prestige that came with employment at PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings). In a now-viral Reddit post, the employee stated that they had secured the bank job nine months ago after studying hard for it, but the story after starting the job was completely different.

"I've been working at a public sector bank for 9 months now, and honestly? I feel like we've all been sold a lie," the employee wrote in the r/IndianWorkplace subreddit, adding: "I studied so hard for it, and when I got in, my family was so proud. There is no respect, neither from customer nor from management. For management we are slaves."

The employee said they were given 'insane' targets and told to sell insurance, credit cards and loans while the work pressure was non-stop.

"I'm a banker, not a street vendor. The pressure is non-stop. Telling a rural branch to do FD of 1cr everyday is just stupidity. And the work culture? Super toxic. The seniors act like bosses from a 90s movie."

Terming the job a 'trap', the employee said their branch was severely understaffed, meaning three employees had to do the work of six people.

"The line of customers never ends, the phone is always ringing. You can't even go to the bathroom without someone getting mad. The worst part? You don't have a life. They act like your time means nothing."

The employee advised others preparing for bank jobs to understand that the reality was quite different from what they were used to from the outside.

'You can find another job'

As the post went viral, social media users advised the individual to quit their job and look for alternatives.

"Quit, do what you think is right and thank me later. I and many others quit SBI and banks of its ilk. I have never regretted my decision," said one user, while another added: "I know a person who died on a Public Sector Bank job because of Typhoid. Don't be that person."

A third commented: "Leave. Nothing is worth your peace. You can find another job. You can't find another life."

A fourth said: "My dad used to work in a government bank. He didn't have sales pressure, I guess, but everything else you mentioned was true.. He used to come home late most of the time . Especially during the financial year-end "closing". I lost all love for govt jobs then. Banking is not an easy life."

Last month, a 39-year-old government bank employee posted a similar rant, stating that the toll of relentless pressure for 15 years had pushed them to the brink.

Hamas Agrees To Free All Israeli Hostages Under Trump's Gaza Plan

Hamas said on Friday it would agree to some aspects of U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to end the Gaza war, including releasing hostages and handing over administration of the enclave, but that it would seek negotiations over many of its other terms.

In a copy of the statement seen by Reuters, Hamas issued its response to Trump's 20-point plan after the U.S. president gave the Palestinian militant group until Sunday to accept or reject the proposal. Trump has not said whether the terms would be subject to negotiation, as Hamas is seeking.

Notably, Hamas did not say whether it would agree to a stipulation that it disarm, a demand by Israel and the U.S. that it has previously rejected.

In its statement, Hamas said it "appreciates the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for an end to the war on the Gaza Strip, the exchange of prisoners, (and) the immediate entry of aid," among other terms.

It said it was announcing its "approval of releasing all occupation prisoners — both living and remains — according to the exchange formula contained in President Trump's proposal, with the necessary field conditions for implementing the exchange."

But Hamas added: "In this context, the movement affirms its readiness to immediately enter, through the mediators, into negotiations to discuss the details."

The group said it was ready "to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents (technocrats) based on Palestinian national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic backing."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Hamas' response to the proposal, which is backed by Israel as well as Arab and European powers.

Trump's plan specifies an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of all hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas and the introduction of a transitional government led by an international body.

Extra Fee For Cash-On-Delivery? Minister Promises Crackdown On 'Dark Patterns'

Cracking down on 'dark patterns' employed by e-commerce companies, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has said firms that charge extra for cash-on-delivery will now face action.

Several companies make consumers pay an extra fee if they opt for the cash-on-delivery option rather than pre-paying for the order online.

Railing against such practices, an X user had, on Wednesday, posted about an experience he had with an e-commerce firm in which he was charged Rs 226 in the name of 'offer handling fee, payment handling fee and protect promise fee'.

"Forget Rain Fee by Zomato/Swiggy/Zepto. See the masterstroke by Flipkart: Offer Handling Fee (for giving me the discount you advertised??); Payment Handling Fee (for letting me pay you??) and Protect Promise Fee (protecting me from what... satisfaction?)," he wrote

"Next up: "Scrolling App Fee"," he joked.

Responding to the post on Friday, Joshi said such practices will be scrutinised and platforms violating consumer rights will face action.

"The Department of Consumer Affairs has received complaints against e-commerce platforms charging extra for Cash-on-Delivery, a practice classified as a dark pattern that misleads and exploits consumers," the minister wrote.

"A detailed investigation has been initiated and steps are being taken to scrutinise these platforms closely. Strict action will be taken against those violating consumer rights to ensure transparency and uphold fair practices in India's growing e-commerce sector," he added.

Dark patterns are tactics used by companies to extract money or data from consumers without them realising

These practices include platforms showing there are only one or two pieces of an item left to speed up a buyer's purchase decision when, in reality, there are several more in stock, or setting a fake time limit - like 'offer expires in 10 minutes' - to achieve the same end.

Using confusing language for fees or making them harder to spot by putting them at the very end of a long list also qualifies as a dark pattern.

The Centre has earlier called meetings with e-commerce companies to ask them to desist from such practices and is working on legislation to fix the problem.

Consumers can also report such practices on the Jagriti app.

Tamil Nadu Bans 'Coldrif' Cough Syrup After Child Deaths In Rajasthan

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the sale of cough syrup 'Coldrif' and ordered its removal from the market following suspicions linking it to the death of 11 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

With effect from October 1, the sale of the cough syrup manufactured by the city-based firm, has been prohibited across Tamil Nadu, an official of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department said.

Inspections were carried out at the pharmaceutical company's manufacturing facility in Sunguvarchathram in neighbouring Kancheepuram district during the last two days and samples have been collected, he said.

The company, he said, supplies the medicines to Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry.

The samples would be sent to the government run laboratories to test for the presence of the chemical 'Diethylene Glycol', he told PTI.

Taking cognisance of the infant deaths, the Union Health Ministry on Friday issued an advisory to all States and Union Territories, directing that cough and cold medications should not be prescribed to children under the age of 2 years.

The advisory, issued by the Directorate General of Health Services, comes amid reports of child deaths allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrups in Madhya Pradesh and similar reported incidents in Rajasthan.

The food safety official said, "The department has been asked to prevent the sale of the syrup and freeze the stocks from October 1." The samples collected from the facility would be also be tested by the Union government.

Responding to a query, he said, the syrup has been supplied to Puducherry, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh by the company.

According to the Drug department, the company has been ordered to halt production of the syrup at the facility till the reports from the laboratories are out.

"We expect the report to be released in the coming days," he said.

Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath blamed mixing of 'brake oil solvent' in cough syrups for the deaths of children with a suspected kidney ailment in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district since September 7.

The toll in the case reached 9 in Madhya Pradesh while media reports said of two infants died in Rajasthan.

Ravan Was Naughty, Not Evil: Simi Garewal's Post Sparks Controversy

On the occasion of Dussehra, Simi Garewal stirred an unexpected debate online with a post on her X handle. In a surprising note, she praised Ravan, calling him "slightly naughty" and claiming he was "more educated than half of our Parliament."

Simi Garewal's Take On Ravan

Addressing Ravan directly, Garewal wrote, "Dear Ravana... Every year, on this day, we celebrate the victory of good over evil.. But.. technically.. your behaviour should be re-classified from 'Evil' to 'Slightly Naughty'."

She went on to justify her unconventional view, highlighting that although Ravan abducted Sita, he treated her with respect, offering "good food, shelter, and even women security guards (not too good looking though)." She added, "Your request for marriage was full of humility.. and you never threw acids when rejected. Even when Lord Rama killed you.. you were wise enough to seek his apologies. And.. I believe you were more educated than half of our Parliament."

Garewal concluded on a light-hearted note, saying, "Trust me dude.. there ain't no any hard feelings to burn you... Just that it's the In-Thing. Happy Dussera."

Netizens React

Her post quickly drew sharp reactions from social media users, many criticising her romanticised portrayal of Ravan. One user commented, "Dear Simi Garewal, The moment he abducts you, all this romanticism will evaporate and you would be sitting in a police station and slamming the cops if they say 'bas apaharan hi to kiya hai shaadi karna chah raha hai behen'. Ain't no hard feelings for you, but you have lost your mind."

Others referenced the Ramayana, highlighting Ravan's violent history. One user wrote, "Ravan was no sweet misunderstood victim. Before Sita, he had already tried to violate Vedavati forcibly, and she burnt herself to escape his advances, cursing him that he would be destroyed by a woman. He had violently molested Rambha, and her horrified husband Nalakubara, cursed him that his head would shatter if he ever forced himself on another woman. Then he forcibly abducted Sita, imprisoned her, threatened her daily, and terrorised her, yet could not touch her because of her divine purity and his prior curses."

Another user emphasised the symbolic meaning of Ravan's defeat, noting, "Before Sita, Ravan had tried to violate the wife of Nal Kubera, which is why he was cursed that if he tried to forcefully violate a woman he would be destroyed. The fact that he didn't force himself on Sita did not stem from his alleged decency but from his fear of destruction."

Some users were more blunt in their criticism. One wrote, "Not sure if this is a desperate cry for attention or a masterclass in ignorance. Either way, you win the trophy."

Simi Garewal's unconventional post has sparked a lively debate, with opinions divided between those intrigued by her perspective and those highlighting the darker aspects of Ravan's legend.

Rani On Why Her Wedding Pics With Aditya Chopra Will Never Be Made Public

Rani Mukerji has always been very particular about her private life. The actress, who is married to filmmaker and producer Aditya Chopra, recently opened up about why their wedding pictures will most likely never be released.

What's Happening

  • Rani Mukerji was recently in conversation with ANI, where she shared why her wedding was kept private.
  • When the host jokingly remarked that perhaps the couple's wedding pictures would be revealed on their silver jubilee, Rani laughed and said, "That's a very good idea."
  • Explaining the reason behind their privacy, Rani said, "My husband is a very private person, and he wanted the wedding to be very private. Obviously, I don't think he would ever want the wedding pictures to be out."

Why Rani Mukerji Keeps Her Personal Life Away From The Spotlight

Rani Mukerji also shared her views on why she has always maintained clear boundaries between her personal and professional life. She said that one needs to "protect their environment."

She told ANI, "I was always private, because my work and personal lives are different. If you've seen me through the years, I only make an appearance when there's a reason for it. It's not always, all the time. Because I do think that there are certain things you need to keep to yourself. You need to protect your environment slightly. Everything can't be for everyone to see, because we are already so exposed, so that exposure is enough. There are things that you need to keep private - where you are going, what you're doing, and what you're doing with your family."

She continued, "I don't see them as rules, I see it as a way of life. Rules are often perceived as something imposed by others that must be followed blindly. That's not correct, because Adi as a person is very independent, and he has a lot of respect for women. That's how Yash uncle and Pam aunty brought him up."

How Yash Chopra And Pamela Chopra Taught Aditya Chopra To Respect Women

Rani Mukerji further revealed that Aditya Chopra respects women deeply, and these values were instilled in him by his parents. She noted that Pamela Chopra had a very crucial role to play in Yash Chopra's life, which strongly influenced Aditya while growing up.

Rani added, "When you see Yash uncle's films, there's a lot of importance given to female characters. And Pam aunty was a very important person in Yash uncle's professional and personal life. The way Adi treats me in his life, there's a lot of respect. He doesn't tell me there's a certain thing I should do; it's my choice. In fact, he tells me to go out more often."

In A Nutshell

Rani Mukerji explained why her wedding pictures with Aditya Chopra may never be made public. She also spoke about how Aditya was raised by role models like Yash Chopra and Pamela Chopra, which shaped his deep respect for women.

Gold Hits Record Highs: Here's What Expert Says About Investing Now

Gold prices on Wednesday (Oct 1) traded at a new high of levels above the Rs 1,17,000 mark in India. The gold prices rallied by Rs 1,100 to breach the Rs 1.21 lakh per 10 grams mark in the national capital. As per PTI, the All India Sarafa Association said that gold of 99.9 per cent purity jumped Rs 1,100 and hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,21,100 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

The recent surge occurred amid the US government shutdown after Congress failed to approve fresh federal funding. The ongoing standoff could lead to the loss of thousands of federal jobs. The shutdown might also halt the release of a September employment report, slow air travel, suspend scientific research and even withhold pay from US troops.

Will gold prices increase further, and should people invest now?

Meanwhile, in India, buyers are discussing whether or not the prices will increase further, especially ahead of Diwali, when a large number of people buy gold and silver.

Mayank Misra, Vice President (Product) at INDmoney, told NDTV that the gold prices in India have hit a record high, driven by global factors such as expectations of US rate cuts, festive demand and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

"While further increases are possible if global instability persists, prices are likely to remain volatile, so short-term swings cannot be ruled out," he said.

Gold has long been regarded as a safe-haven asset and a reliable store of value, attracting investors across generations and economies. But it's not risk-free.

While commenting from an investment perspective, he said, "At these elevated levels, consumers should remember that gold remains a hedge against uncertainty but does not guarantee immediate returns."

"Diversifying through gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), digital gold, or systematic purchases can help balance risk instead of making large lump-sum investments now."

Madhya Pradesh Man Bleeds Outside Police Station While Cops Get Car Washed

Daboh police station in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district has once again brought the police under sharp criticism, with an incident that residents described as the height of negligence and insensitivity.

In what many are calling a glaring example of "MP ajab hai, sabse gajab hai," a grievously injured man was left unattended outside a police station while officers allegedly prioritised getting their car washed.

The incident happened on Tuesday in Barthara village under Daboh police station limits. According to reports, a long-standing property dispute turned violent when Narayan Parihar and Komal Parihar attacked their relative, Shyamu Parihar, with an axe and sticks while he was constructing a wall.

Bleeding heavily, Shyamu Parihar was rescued by his brother Ramu, who rushed him to the police station seeking urgent help and protection. But instead of immediate medical attention or prompt filing of a case, what followed shocked bystanders.

Witnesses alleged that police personnel, including sub-inspector Ravindra Kumar Manjhi, were more concerned about getting their vehicle washed than attending to the victim.

Shyamu Parihar lay outside the police station writhing in pain, while a policeman kept himself busy with getting a car washed.

Even after an hour's delay, the first information report (FIR) was reportedly registered only after repeated pleas from the complainant's family. More disturbingly, locals alleged the police demanded money in exchange for filing the complaint, and when it was not paid, the tables were turned - the victim was made the accused in the case.

The victim's family, outraged by the delay and alleged extortion, say the lack of timely action endangered Shyamu Parihar's life.

"Instead of saving my brother, they were bargaining with us," said Ramu Parihar, adding they have appealed directly to Superintendent of Police Asit Yadav for justice.

Acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, inspector Rakesh Sharma said the behavior of the sub inspector was unacceptable and should not have occurred. However, no immediate action has yet been confirmed against the officers involved.

The episode has sparked widespread anger in the region, with locals demanding a fair probe and strict disciplinary measures. Many residents described the incident as not just negligence but an outright abuse of power, emblematic of why public trust in the police remained shaky.
