After Kangana Ranaut Requests Stay On Defamation Case, Javed Akhtar Says...

Actor Kangana Ranaut's petition for a stay on proceedings of a defamation complaint filed against her was only a delaying tactic, lyricist and complainant Javed Akhtar submitted to the Bombay High Court on Tuesday.

Javed Akhtar urged the high court to dismiss the petition filed by the Queen actor.

Earlier this month, Kangana Ranaut approached the high court for a stay on Javed Akhtar's criminal defamation complaint filed against her in 2020. She urged the High Court to hear the case along with a cross-complaint filed by her against Javed Akhtar.

The defamation case against Kangana Ranaut is in the magistrate's court in Andheri. A sessions court had stayed Kangana's complaint against Javed Akhtar.

In her petition before the High Court, Kangana Ranaut stated that both cases should be tried together as they had genesis in a meeting (between Kangana Ranaut and Javed Akhtar) in 2016.

Javed Akhtar submitted an affidavit through his advocate Jay Bharadwaj stating Kangana Ranaut has not challenged any order passed by the magistrate's court, and without any basis, has sought a stay on the proceedings of the defamation complaint.

This was nothing but an attempt to delay the proceedings, Javed Akhtar stated.

"Kangana Ranaut is not challenging any judicial order passed by the lower court but has based the entire writ petition on assumptions and presumptions coupled with an unwarranted optimism of the proceedings pending in courts below", the affidavit said.

On Tuesday, when Kangana Ranaut's plea came up for hearing before a division bench headed by Justice Revati Mohite Dere, the High Court said the assignment to hearing such petitions is with a single bench, and not with a division bench.

It directed the high court registry to verify the same and place the petition before the appropriate bench for a hearing.

Javed Akhtar had claimed that Kangana Ranaut defamed and damaged his "immaculate reputation" by dragging his name into actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death in her interview with a news channel in July 2020.

In 2021, Kangana Ranaut hit back by filing a counter-complaint against Javed Akhtar before a magistrate's court, alleging criminal intimidation and insult to modesty.

She had claimed that during her meeting with Javed Akhtar at his residence in 2016, he criminally intimidated her, demanding that she apologise to a co-star.

7 Members Of A Family Went To Sleep, 5 Were Found Dead Next Day In UP

Five children of a family sleeping in their house died due to suffocation in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district. Two others in critical situation were rushed to a hospital.

They had burnt a coal brazier (angithi) inside the house which could have led to the accident, police said. "Prima facie the cause of death could be due to lack of oxygen because these people had burnt a coal brazier in their room.

Seven members of the family went to sleep on Monday night, and when they didn't open their door till Tuesday evening, the neighbours got suspicious. They forcefully entered the home after breaking the door.

The house belonged to Raheezuddin whose three children and two children of his relatives have died in the accident. The condition of his wife and brother is said to be critical.

A heavy police force, including Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh, and administrative officials reached the spot and started a probe into the matter.

Burning of Angithi or coal oven harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc. If the room it is burned in is closed, not much air can enter the room. Continuous discharge of these gases reduces the flow of oxygen in the closed room and can cause suffocation. Prolonged exposure can even cause death.

"Let Love Be Free From...": Team Animal On Javed Akhtar's Comment On Film

Jan 7 Days after Javed Akhtar took a swipe at "Animal", the team of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer on Sunday clapped back at the veteran lyricist-writer asking to "let love be free from the politics of gender".

Akhtar, who along with former writing partner Salim Khan, is known for penning films such as "Zanjeer", "Deewar", and "Mr India", recently said the commercial success of films with problematic scenes was a "dangerous" trend.

While he didn't mention the name of "Animal", the screenwriter cited the example of the film's controversial bootlicking scene featuring Ranbir and Triptii Dimri, who play Ranvijay and Zoya.

In response, the "Animal" team on X tagged Akhtar and wrote: "Writer of your calibre cannot understand the betrayal of a lover (Between Zoya & Ranvijay) then all your art form is big FALSE... Let love be free from the politics of gender... (sic)." Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, "Animal" emerged as the most divisive film of 2023 which received criticism for its graphic content, extreme violence, and treatment of female characters. It's also noteworthy that the movie is one of the top earning Hindi films of the year with Rs 900 crore at box office globally.

In the post shared by the film's official X page, the "Animal" team further said had a woman asked a man to lick her shoe, the moment would have been celebrated in the name of "feminism".

"If a woman (betrayed and fooled by a man in the name of love) would have said 'lick my shoe' then you guys would have celebrated it by calling it feminism... Let's just call them lovers. LOVER cheated and lied. LOVER said lick my shoe. Period @Javedakhtarjadu," the post read.

At the Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival in Aurangabad last week, Akhtar had expressed his concerns about the current state of cinema.

"I believe it's a testing time for the young filmmakers today as to what kind of characters they want to create that the society will applaud. For instance, if there's a film in which a man asks a woman to lick his shoe or if a man says it's okay to slap a woman, and if the film is a super-duper hit, then that's very dangerous," Akhtar said.

The noted writer had also said that the onus to decide which films to accept and reject lies with the audience. PTI RDS RDS RDS
