"We Closed Window Of Vulnerability": S Jaishankar On Article 370 Abrogation

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday that the decision to take the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 1948 was a "fundamental error" and by abrogating Article 370, India closed a 'window of vulnerability' which New Delhi had been "foolish enough" to open.

He said that at that time, India had a view of UN Security Council as a neutral arbiter while a set of countries with their "geo-political agenda" used Kashmir as an issue of "vulnerability" for New Delhi.

The EAM was speaking on his book 'Why Bharat Matters' with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tejasavi Surya at the Golden Jubilee Celebration of PES University in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

"Today it is very clear, in fact not now, it was very clear by 1970s, that taking the Kashmir issue to the UN Security Council was a fundamental error because you are taking it at the court where the judges are all stacked against you. These were Western countries who had a bias towards Pakistan," Jaishankar said.

He said that if India had been "hard-headed," it wouldn't have made that 'misreading'.

"Actually, if we had been hard-headed, if we had a good sense of international politics at that stage, we would not have taken that call. It was done as a misreading of what the world was about. Somewhere we saw there is a sanctity about UN...these chaps will be impartial and neutral arbiters," the EAM added.

Jaishankar further said Article 370 had profound implications not just within the country but also on country's foreign policy and it took India decades to finally abrogate it.

"We were taken in for a ride by a set of countries who had their geo-political agenda, who used Kashmir as an issue of vulnerability for us and they continue to use it. It took us decades to finally take the call on Article 370. To me, Article 370 was not just the call within the country...it actually has profound foreign policy implications. We closed today a window of vulnerability which we were foolish enough to open in 1948," he said.

Laying emphasis on young people visiting places having strong historical cultural imprints, the EAM said that a lot of people across the world will be looking forward to the inauguration of Ram Mandir on January 22.

"It's important for young people and those who travel abroad to go to those places where our cultural imprint historically been very strong. Then you will realise that what is happening in India is not something which is limited to us. As you start moving eastwards, you can see a very strong cultural influence," Jaishankar said.

He added, "Because in Korea, there is a kind of belief that, they actually have a connection between their Royalty and Ayodhya. In the last few years, we have seen the revival of Ayodhya. We have actually had Korean participation in cultural programmes. They take it as a matter of pride. On 22nd of January, a lot of people across the world will be looking what's happening".

Dunkin Donuts Sued Over Toilet Explosion That Left US Man Covered In Waste

A customer at a Dunkin' Donuts outlet in Florida, US, has filed a negligence lawsuit against the coffee chain, claiming that he was injured by an exploding toilet at the eatery. According to USA Today, Paul Kerouac is seeking $50,000 (approximately Rs 41.55 lakh) in damages after he said that he suffered "severe and long-term injuries" following the explosion of the toilet.

In his lawsuit, Mr Kerouac alleged that he visited the men's room at a Winter Park Dunkin', outside of Orlando, in January last year, when the commode erupted and left him covered in debris, faeces and urine. After the incident, he sought help from the employees, who told him they were aware of the issue as prior incidents had occurred, the outlet reported.

In his lawsuit, Mr Kerouac revealed that the incident took place on January 6, 2022. He detailed the horrifying aftermath, stating that he emerged from the men's room "covered with debris, including human faeces and urine". He also claimed that Dunkin' Donuts staff at the Florida coffee shop openly admitted awareness of "problems with the toilet".

"As a direct result of Defendant's breach and/or multiple breaches of its duties and obligations to Plaintiff, who was lawfully on Defendant's premises, Plaintiff unwittingly became the victim of the exploding toilet and of the aftermath which followed, and sustained damages, including injuries and emotional and mental distress," the lawsuit states.

Now, seeking justice, Mr Kerouac is demanding $50,000 in damages and legal fees on account of their alleged negligence. He is also seeking prejudgment interest, post-judgment interest, and costs of actions, plus a trial by jury.

Meanwhile, this is not the only lawsuit the coffee chain has seen in recent years. According to Fortune, an elderly woman won a $3 million settlement after a scalding hot coffee from the eatery spilled all over her in 2021, leaving her with horrific burns. The woman was ordering from the drive-thru window of a franchise located on Nelson Brogdon Boulevard in Sugar Hill, Georgia, near the city of Atlanta. As she received her drink, the lid came undone and the piping hot liquid spilled out. It splashed all over her, leaving her with severe second and third-degree burns that forced her to undergo skin grafts and a long period of rehabilitation.

Woman Had Lighter In Hand. They Broke Open The Door To Save Her, Child

A woman and her daughter were saved in the nick of time by emergency services officials who responded to a complaint of a gas leak at an apartment in Bengaluru's upscale Whitefield area. The neighbours were alerted by the smell of gas, which leaked into the apartment as the woman had turned on the cooking cylinder.

According to officials, the woman was attempting to die by suicide along with her child when teams of the fire and emergency department knocked on their doors and found the door bolted from the inside.

The authorities broke open the apartment door with rods and sticks after the woman refused to let them in.

As they broke through the door, the woman was seen standing outside the kitchen with a lighter. The fire officials and the neighbours carried her out of the apartment along with her daughter even as she vehemently resisted.

Several media reports claimed the woman was upset over repeated fights with her family and tried to die by suicide when her husband was at work.

"What Killed The American Dream?" Reddit Post Sparks Discussion

The American dream is all about upward mobility. Any US citizen, if they work hard, should be able to not only succeed but also rise above the station of their parents. The US has used this simple ideology to become one of the great power nations of the world, socially, economically and politically. This principle has also attracted countless immigrants who fled their countries to live the American dream. However, now with the ongoing economic crisis, rising costs, increased credit card debt and wealth disparity, many are asking what killed the "American dream".

A post on Reddit titled "What killed the American dream?" has sparked a discussion among users. The post included a screenshot of another social media post that read, "Ordered pizza for my kids and my daughters math teacher is the person who delivered the pizza. This lady has a master's degree, makes less money than by dumb a** and has to deliver pizza to make ends meet. This aint the American dream they keep tryna sell us".

Take a look below:

Reddit user FluentInFinance shared the post a few days back. Since then, it has garnered more than 31,000 upvotes. In the comments section users shared what they think killed the American dream.

"Neoliberalism killed it. Shareholder primacy killed it. Lowering corporations taxes and legalizing stock buybacks," wrote one user. "Over consumption, access to easy debt (credit cards, car loans, etc) keeping up with the neighbors, and government involvement and interference in the economy and especially Higher education," commented another.

"All depends on location. In my state teachers make 6 figures and all that I know live very comfortably," expressed a third user. "My neighbor is a teacher in one of the tougher areas of my city. He has 3 kids and his wife is a teacher too. He recently took a job at the airport too and they put him on the graveyard shift... so now he works overnight 3 days per week and then goes to teach. This country is broken," shared a fourth user.

Meanwhile, last year it was reported that the 'American dream' triggered a big crisis in New York. The quest for a better life and more opportunities has thousands of immigrants moving to the Big Apple. But at what cost? A housing crisis and a big burden on the administration.

New York City received 118,000 migrants since last year, over 60,000 of them housed in the city's shelter system. Most migrants came to New York from countries in South America and West Africa in hopes of safety, work and stability. But integrating them into a new city isn't an easy task - both for the migrants and the administration.

The migrant influx could cost $12 billion over three years, claimed Mayor Adams who has previously looked into housing migrants in parking lots and cruise ships.

Arvind Kejriwal To Be Arrested Today? AAP Leaders Raise Alarm

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal could be arrested in the morning following a raid at his home, leaders of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party tweeted hours after he refused to appear for questioning in the alleged Delhi liquor scam. Party sources said they are ready for any eventuality. Sources in the Enforcement Directorate – the central agency probing the money laundering angle, which has called Mr Kejriwal for questioning several times -- have said they have no such information.

"News coming in that ED is going to raid @ArvindKejriwal's residence tmrw morning. Arrest likely," posted senior party leader and Delhi minister Aatishi on X, formerly Twitter.

Similar posts were seen on the handles of senior party leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj, Jasmine Shah and Sandeep Pathak.

Mr Kejriwal has skipped summons for questioning thrice. The last time he refused to appear was today. He had also refused to appear before the probe agency on November 2 and December 21. Under the rules, a non-bailable warrant can be issued against him any time and he can be arrested.

In April, he was questioned for nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation. He has not been named as an accused in the case.

Mr Kejriwal insists that the summons are "motivated" and says it is not clear whether he is being called as a witness or a suspect in the case. His party said it was a plan to stop him from campaigning in the national election due later this year.

With three of its leaders -- Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Satyendra Jain -- behind the bars, AAP has long been anticipating the eventuality and has discussed the possible courses of action.  They even want Mr Kejriwal to remain the Chief Minister and do his job from jail.

The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing the excise policy, which would have brought them a 12 per cent profit. A liquor lobby it dubbed the "South Group" had paid kickbacks, part of which was routed to public servants. The Enforcement Directorate alleged laundering of the kickbacks.

The BJP has alleged that the proceeds of the alleged scam were used by the AAP to fund its large-scale campaign in Gujarat, in which it got a 12.91 per cent votes and established itself as a national party.

The party has also taken a swipe at the Delhi Chief Minister, saying he is "shaking in fear" and is not appearing before the agency because he knows that he is the "kingpin" of the alleged liquor policy scam.
