Trains To Zip Through Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Tunnel At 350 Km A Hour

In a significant breakthrough, engineers have completed the first mountain tunnel on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor through which trains will zip past at a speed of 350 km per hour, officials said.

The 350-metre-long horse-shoe-shaped tunnel has been built to perfect alignment in the mountains of Zaroli village near here as even a minor flaw could play spoilsport.

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) plans to build six more tunnels on the 508-km route between Mumbai and Ahmedabad that will be connected with state-of-the-art Shinkansen trainsets to be procured from Japan.

"What makes us celebrate it is that it is the first tunnel in India through which a train with a speed of 350 kmph will pass," SP Mittal, Chief Project Manager of the Valsad section, told PTI on Thursday.

He said his team did not face a single untoward incident over the entire construction period.

"The biggest challenge for us was how to keep the alignment of the tunnel absolutely straight because the bullet train will run at a speed of 350 kmph and a minor alignment flaw can play spoilsport. So every specification has to be followed precisely and you will not find a deviation of even a single millimetre," Mittal said.

The NHSRCL has awarded the contract to Larsen and Toubro and the technique that has been used to make the tunnel is the well-established New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which has already been used in India for rail and road projects in several mountain areas.

"We have just dug the skeleton structure of the complete tunnel and the finishing work will start now," he added.

According to Mr Mittal, it took more than a year and a large workforce to complete the tunneling work.

He also expressed great satisfaction as it happened to be the first mountain tunnel built under his direct supervision.

When blasts are carried out for such tunnels, the safety of the workers and people residing in the vicinity is paramount, he said.

"We took every precaution so that stones, boulders, or any other such material did not spread in the nearby area and hurt villagers or our workers," Mittal said.

After coming into existence in 2016, the NHSRCL laid the foundation stone of the bullet train project in 2017 and it was proposed to be ready by December 2023. However, land acquisition issues delayed the ambitious project.

Though the construction work is going on in full swing, the new deadline for the project's operationalisation is yet to be announced.

"A commuter using this bullet train can finish the 508-km journey in two hours and seven minutes. At present, the train journey takes about five hours," the spokesperson of the NHSRCL told PTI.

In a statement, NHSRCL said the tunnel was located around one kilometre away from Zaroli village of Umbergaon taluka in Valsad.

"The tunnel structure comprises a tunnel, tunnel portal, and other connecting structures like tunnel entrance hood. NHSRCL has achieved a major milestone with the breakthrough of the mountain tunnel," it said.

The mountain tunnel is 350 metres long, 10.25 metres high with a diameter of 12.6 m.

The six other mountain tunnels for which contracts have been awarded are in Kasabekaman, Chandrapada, Chandasar, Mithagar, Vasantwadi, and Ambesari in Maharashtra's Palghar district, some 100 kilometres from Mumbai, officials said.

The tunnels are being built using the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) which includes drilling holes on the tunnel face, charging of explosives, controlled blasting, removal of muck (blasted rock pieces), and installation of primary support, which includes steel ribs, lattice girder, shotcrete, and rock bolts based on the type of rocks as assessed by geologist after each blast.

The NATM was used to build tunnels in the Austrian Alps and has proved to be very useful in diversified geological conditions where forecasting of the rock mass is difficult due to rapidly changing geology.

The high-speed train corridor also has a 21-kilometre tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Shilphata in Thane district. Seven kilometres of this structure will be under Thane creek, making it the first undersea tunnel in the country.

First Time In 48 Years: Bairstow Achieves Sensational First In WC History

Jonny Bairstow became the first batter ever in history to open a Cricket World Cup with a six during the opening match between England and New Zealand on Thursday. It was the first scoring shot of the tournament as Bairstow comfortably heaved a delivery from Trent Boult over fine-leg for a six. However, England were unable to score big as New Zealand bowlers led by Matt Henry kept them in check to 282-9 despite Joe Root's 77. New Zealand invited England to bat first at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad with the English missing their talisman Ben Stokes due to a hip injury.

England lost regular wickets as batsmen failed to convert their starts into bigger scores but Root stood out and put on a key stand of 70 with skipper Jos Buttler, who made 43.

The rest of the batting lacked firepower against a Kiwi attack that missed Tim Southee but kept coming back at the champions in a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final when England won a tied match on boundary count back at Lord's.

Henry returned figures of 3-48. Spinners Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips took two wickets each.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow gave England a brisk start but the Kiwi bowlers soon removed the openers to take control of play on a sunny afternoon in front of a smattering of fans inside the 132,000-capacity arena.

Malan fell caught behind off Henry and Bairstow's knock was cut short by Santner, who got the batsman out for 33 off his left-arm spin.

Harry Brook took on Rachin Ravindra in the left-arm spinner's first over to smash two fours and a six before the bowler had his revenge on the final delivery.

Brook, coming in the starting line-up for Stokes, attempted another big hit but got caught at deep mid-wicket.

Root raised his 37th ODI half-century off 57 balls laced with two fours and one six off a reverse scoop shot.

But he fell to Phillips' off spin while attempting a reverse sweep and England slipped further before Adil Rashid and Mark Wood ensured the team played out their 50 overs.

Shraddha Kapoor Summoned In Game App Case Today, Ranbir Kapoor Seeks Time

Actors Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor have been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today in a case involving a gaming app. They are among the stars who are set to be questioned over the Mahadev app that allegedly provides a platform for illegal betting.

Ranbir Kapoor has requested two weeks' time to appear before the central agency that probes financial frauds. It is not known if Shraddha Kapoor will appear before them today.

Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma and actors Huma Qureshi and Hina Khan too have been summoned in the Mahadev app case on different dates, sources said yesterday. They too have sought two weeks' time to appear before the agency, they added.

The celebrities are not named as accused in the case, but will be questioned over what they know about the mode and flow of payment allegedly done to them by the app's promoters.

Ranbir Kapoor has done several ads promoting the Mahdev app and received a large amount of money that was from the proceeds of a crime, the agency has claimed.

Charges Against Mahadev App

The Mahadev app is an umbrella syndicate that provides online platforms to illegal betting websites to enrol new users, create user IDs and laundering of money through a layered web of benami bank accounts, the ED has alleged.

The latest online gaming rules prohibit betting.

The company's promoters, Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, are from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh and run their operations from Dubai. They operate four-five such apps and made around Rs 200 crore per day, the probe agency claimed.

They do large expenditures in cash in India for advertising of betting websites to attract new users and franchise seekers, the ED said.

Last month, assets worth Rs 417 crore were seized during raids at 39 locations in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bhopal in connection with the Mahadev betting app.

Chandrakar's Rs 200-crore February wedding in the UAE, entirely paid in cash, had brought the Mahadev app under the ED scanner.

"Appreciate Relationship With India, But China Remains Challenge": US

The United States will continue to foster a stronger defence partnership with India, the Pentagon said on Friday.

"We very much appreciate our relationship with India on a defence level. We continue to foster a stronger defence partnership with India and that is something that I think you'll continue to see us do going forward," Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder told reporters at a news conference here.

In 1997, defence trade between India and the US was almost negligible, today it stands above USD 20 billion.

Responding to a question, Ryder said China remains the "pacing challenge" for the Department of Defense.

"We do appreciate the partnership that we have with India and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region when it comes to preserving individual nations' sovereignty and abiding by the international rules-based order that has preserved peace and stability for many years," he said.
