Home Guard Claims "Tortured" By Officer's Wife, Odisha Women Panel Steps In

The Odisha State Commission for Women has sought a report from the Crime Branch of Police in connection with the alleged torture of a woman home guard by the wife of a DIG-rank police officer.

The home guard lost both of her legs under the wheels of a running train in her attempt to die by suicide allegedly after being tortured by a DIG-rank officer's wife, at whose residence she was working.

The State Commission for Women has asked the Crime Branch ADG to submit a report within 15 days from Wednesday.

"We have taken sou motu cognisance of the case and want the report within a fortnight," the panel's chairperson Minati Behera said.

Stating that the women's commission will hold discussions with the victim after she recovers, Behera said necessary steps will be taken according to the law.

The SCW's action came a day after the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) sought a report from the police on the alleged torture.

The woman has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack while the Odisha Police has transferred North Central range DIG Brijesh Rai to the state police headquarters after a hue and cry across the state.

The victim accused the IPS officer's wife of verbally abusing her and beating her up if she failed to perform her job properly.

Rai, however, rejected the allegations and claimed that the woman home guard, identified as Souridri Sahu of Angul district, was disturbed because of some family issues.

G20 Summit: What's Open, What's Closed In Delhi? All You Need To Know

India is going to host the high-profile G20 summit in Delhi next month, which will lead to closure of offices and restrictions on traffic routes. The summit will be held on September 9 and 10 at the newly-built Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Delhi's Pragati Maidan under India's presidency. But officials and leaders of the world's largest economies will start arriving in the national capital from September 8. This is why central and Delhi governments have announced that their offices will remain closed from September 8-10, along with other private offices and schools.

A day before the G20 summit begins, the country will celebrate Janmashtami on September 7. Though an optional holiday, it is expected that most working places will remain closed due to the big gathering of world leaders.

Leaders who are coming to Delhi

Many heads of state, including US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron, are expected to be attending the G20 Leaders' Summit.

The representatives of nine "guest countries" - Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and the United Arab Emirates - have also been invited by India for the summit.

The 18th G20 summit will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year among ministers, senior officials and civil society.

Some vehicles won't be allowed to enter Delhi

The Delhi Traffic Police is expected to keep cargo trucks out of Delhi for three days. They will be diverted to the Eastern and Western peripheral expressways. However, vehicles with permission or carrying important cargo will be allowed to enter the national capital. A detailed advisory will be issued soon.

Services of Delhi Metro will remain functional, but stations in the New Delhi area, like Supreme Court, Khan Market, Mandi House and Central Secretariat are expected to remain closed for three days.

Traffic restrictions

According to officials, traffic will be restricted for a specific time in some areas of Delhi. This will be done in order to avoid jams and keeping in view the security of the visiting VVIPs. Shopping malls and markets in certain areas will also be closed.

In areas with VVIP movement, buses will either be stopped or alternate routes given. Interstate bus service can be rescheduled around Delhi border.

However, officials said that care will be taken to ensure that there is no impact on the hospital and emergency services, as well as those travelling by rail and air.

Public holiday in Delhi for 3 days

All Delhi government and private offices, and educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will remain closed from September 8-10, as per a notification issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) of the Delhi government.

Markets and shops in the New Delhi area won't be allowed to open during the duration of the summit.

Security arrangement for G20 summit

The Delhi Police has made elaborate security plans with the deployment of more than 450 quick response teams (QRTs) and PCR vans, over 50 ambulances and fire-fighting machinery in and around the airport, 23 designated hotels, Pragati Maidan, Rajghat and along the routes to be taken by the dignitaries and delegates, according to news agency PTI.

Seven disaster management teams will remain stationed at strategic locations including four hotels, Pragati Maidan and Rajghat.

On Photo With Anushka, Suryakumar Trolls Kohli's 'Running Technique'

Virat Kohli will be the one to watch out for in the coming two months as India embark upon a series of important tournaments starting with the Asia Cup 2023 and then the World Cup 2023. If India are to do well in the marquee events, a lot would hinge on how Kohli's bat performs. The former Indian cricket team captain is currently enjoying a brief break from the game. He last featured in the India-West Indies ODI series and will next be seen in action in the match against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 at the Asia Cup 2023.

In the break, while he has been training hard (the videos of which have been posted by the cricketer on his social media accounts), he is also busy doing promotional shoots. Actor Anushka Sharma, who is Kohli's wife, posted a few such images. Kohli's teammate Suryakumar Yadav had a hilarious reaction to the post.

"Bhaiya thoda running technique halka padra hai apka (Brother, you running technique is a little out of way)," Yadav commented.

Comments have been coming from all quarters regarding Kohli ahead of the big events.

The most startling of them was that of former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed. He weighed in on the debate between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam and he believes that Babar may have a slight advantage due to his consistency.

"Kohli's seasons are amazing. If in one season he is amazing, another could be a decline. He is not as consistent as Babar Azam," Javed said on the YouTube channel Events & Happenings Sports.

Besides Priyanka Chopra, some of the biggest names in the Bollywood industry also celebrated the day by posting on their respective social media feeds. Shah Rukh Khan found the perfect lines from a song featuring himself, to sum up the moment. SRK borrowed from Chaand Taare who featured in his 1997 film Yes Boss to caption his post.

In the film, Shah Rukh Khan sings Chaand Taare to his co-star Juhi Chawla and the romantic lyrics lend themselves perfectly to India's moon touchdown. “Chaand Taare todh laoon….Saari Duniya par main chhaoon (I will pluck the moon and stars and spread them across the world),” SRK wrote, adding: “Aaj India aur ISRO chhaa gaya. Congratulations to all the scientists and engineers…the whole team which has made India so proud. Chandrayaan-3 has successfully soft-landed on the moon.”

See Shah Rukh Khan's post here:

After a 40-day journey starting from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission landed successfully. The Vikram lander made a soft lunar landing around 6 PM on August 23.

With this touchdown on the moon in the second attempt in four years, India has become the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing on the lunar surface after the US, China and the erstwhile Soviet Union.

According to PTI reports, Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2. Its objectives are to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, roving on the Moon, and to conduct in-situ scientific experiments.
