Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has joined millions of across the world in congratulating India on becoming the first nation to land near the Moon's south pole. India also became the fourth nation to soft land a craft on the lunar surface.

"What an incredible moment!" Mr Pichai posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"Congratulations to ISRO for the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon this morning. Today, India became the first country to successfully achieve a soft landing on the southern polar region of the Moon," the Google chief executive said, referring to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Areas near the moon's South Pole is seeing a "gold rush" because of high chances of finding large amount of water there, first found by the Chandrayaan-2 mission.

The rover Pragyan rolled out a few hours after lander Vikram's touchdown on the Moon's surface.

Lander Vikram's touched down days after a Russian probe crashed in the same region and four years since the previous Chandrayaan-2 attempt failed at the last moment.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission has captivated public attention since launching nearly six weeks ago in front of thousands of cheering spectators.

Chandrayaan-3 took much longer to reach the Moon than the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 1970s, which arrived in a matter of days.

India used rockets much less powerful than the ones the US used back then, meaning the probe had to orbit the Earth several times to gain speed before embarking on its month-long journey.

The lander detached from its propulsion module last week and had been sending images of the Moon's surface since entering lunar orbit on August 5.

The solar-powered rover Pragyan will explore the lunar surface and transmit data to Earth over its two-week lifespan.

Judge Who Ordered Police Case Against Poll Body Chief Suspended https://amzn.to/3YOV1VL

The Telangana High Court has placed under suspension a special sessions judge in connection with a "direction" given by him to police for registering an FIR against Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and several others, saying the judge acted in "undue haste".

Official sources in Hyderabad and people aware of the development in Delhi said the suspension was initiated on the administrative side against K Jaya Kumar, the judge of special sessions court for trial of MPs/MLAs, after a complaint was lodged with the high court by a senior official of the Election Commission.

Based on a private complaint filed under Section 200 of the CrPC by Raghavendra Raju, the judicial officer "acted in undue haste" without conducting any preliminary enquiry and without recording the statement of the complainant, the high court said.

Thus, there was a serious lapse in the procedure followed by the officer while discharging his duties, the sources said citing the order issued by the high court on the administrative side.

The FIR was registered on August 11 against Telangana Excise Minister V Srinivas Goud, CEC Kumar and a host of other officials after being referred by the sessions court for allegedly "tampering" Goud's 2018 state assembly election affidavit.

The matter was referred to police by the sessions court on a private complaint which alleged that Goud, MLA from Mahabubnagar, had "tampered" with the election affidavit by suppressing facts.

While Goud was named as the first accused, CEC Kumar and several other officials were made co-accused, who the complainant alleged had colluded with the minister and closed the election affidavit without taking any further action.

The judicial officer was placed under suspension by the high court in exercise of the Telangana Civil Services Rules, 1991 "in larger public interest", the sources said citing the order.

Chilling Video Shows Police Rescuing Woman Chained To Floor Of US Home

A woman was found chained to the floor of a home in Kentucky for two days and was rescued by police. The footage of the dramatic rescue was captured on bodycam.

The police reached the location at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday after a neighbour reported hearing screaming. Louisville Metro police officers tried to break into the building by kicking down doors and windows, but the house was completely barricaded, the police said.

Moments later, the officer used a ladder to reach the second floor, where the window had been broken. The unidentified woman was sobbing hysterically as police reached her, reported the Independent. The woman was bolted to the floor with screws that were attached to a chain and secured around her neck by a MasterLock.

The police used an axe to break the chain which was bolted to the floor with screws. Rescuers later used bolt cutters to free the woman from the chain as she sobbed on the front porch of the home.

The suspect Moises May, 36, was arrested two days later. He was keeping the woman locked up following an argument that turned violent, according to reports obtained by WAVE3.

The reports further said that the woman had left the night of the argument but returned the next day to collect her belongings. The accused locked her inside a deadbolted room and took her phone.

May share a child with the woman. He is accused of chopping the woman's hair off with a machete, forcing her to strip down before he chained her to the floor and threatened to kill her.

"You're gonna get it tonight. I told you the next time you leave and don't come home, I'd kill you," May reportedly told her, according to the police report.

May has been charged with one count of kidnapping, intimidating a participant in the legal process, wanton endangerment, assault, terroristic threatening and harassment, the Independent reported.

His bond was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to reappear in court on 28 August.

Lisa Hu, Woman Who Disappeared 8 Years Ago, Found Alive In US

An Oakland woman who disappeared nearly eight years ago was found safe, the Oakland Police Department said on Sunday. The police took Lisa Hu, 31, off their missing persons list after she was confirmed to be safe, CBS News reported.

According to police, Ms Hu went missing on December 8, 2015, when she was in her early 20's. She was last seen in the 900 block of 34th Street.

Lisa Hu was estranged from her mother at the time, but the mother-daughter duo recently reunited and Ms Hu reached out to Oakland Police to ask if her name could be removed from the list of missing people.

The police shut the case after determining that there was no foul play involved in her disappearance.

The police did not share where Hu was all these years. However, the police informed that she was not harmed or kept against her will.

Earlier, a 25-year-old man in Texas, who was found alive eight years after he was reported missing, was sexually abused by his mother for a year.

Rudy Farias disappeared in 2015 at the age of 17 while walking his two dogs. But activist Quanell X claimed on Wednesday that Mr Farias was never missing, and instead was actually trapped at home with his mother, who subjected him to twisted abuse and "made him play daddy". He made the claims at an impromptu press conference.

India's Chandrayaan-3 will attempt to land on the moon's south pole today. Success for the moon mission will make India the fourth country to master the technology of soft landing on the lunar surface after the US, China and the erstwhile Soviet Union.

According to experts, the final 15 to 20 minutes will determine the success of the mission when Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander with rover Pragyan will make its soft landing.

The live telecast of the event will be available on the ISRO website, its YouTube channel, Facebook, and public broadcaster DD National TV from 5:27 PM.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched on July 14 from India's main space port in Andhra Pradesh.

Sandwich Chain Subway Nears Deal To Be Bought For $9 Billion: Report

The Subway sandwich chain is near a deal to be acquired for more than $9 billion in a transaction that could be announced as soon as Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter said.

Bids for the sandwich chain were due Tuesday, the person said, with competing offers from Roark Capital and a consortium that includes private equity firms TDR and Sycamore.

The winner is expected to be the high bid in an all-cash deal.

Originally founded in 1965 as an Italian-style submarine sandwich shop, Subway today has nearly 37,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries.

The fast-food chain announced in February it hired JPMorgan to advise it on a possible sale, while saying it "remains committed to the future," according to a February 14 press release.

A Subway spokesperson said Tuesday there would be no comment "until the transaction has been completed," according to an email to AFP.

Atlanta-based Roark is well-known in the fast-food and prepared foods space, already owning Buffalo Wild Wings, Baskin-Robbins and Seattle's Best Coffee, as well as other assets including Orange Theory gyms.

Roark "has shown that it knows how to nurture restaurant brands and help them to grow, including through expansion," said Neil Saunders of GlobalData Retail.

New York-based Sycamore and British firm TDR Capital also have investments in the consumer space.

TDR declined comment. Roark and Sycamore did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Subway was launched with a single sandwich shop in Connecticut by Fred DeLuca, who started with an initial $1,000 investment from family friend Peter Buck, as a way to pay his college tuition.

The two men famously started the venture based only on a handshake. DeLuca died in 2015, while Buck passed away in 2021.

In recent time, Subway executives have highlighted cost-cutting efforts to better compete with other restaurant chains, while focusing most growth efforts overseas.

In June, Subway unveiled a franchising agreement to open some 4,000 restaurants in mainland China over the next 20 years.

"By Failing...": Ex-Star's Tongue In Cheek Take On Tilak's Asia Cup Call

Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup 2023 squad was a proof that if one has potential, reaching great heights in your field is always possible. The left-handed batter showed potential in the T20I series against West Indies in the middle-order and he was justly rewarded. In a line-up full of right-handed starts, Varma provides variety though he lacks experience. Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar praised Varma's inclusion and made a tongue in cheek remark. "Yes, because he is in hot form. Look at his domestic career, he's got the numbers to merit a call for India. And also, tongue in cheek, he is also getting ready for 50 overs cricket by failing in his last two matches in the T20 format.

"So he is getting ready for 50-over cricket. It is hard to find a weakness in him, in white ball cricket. And as I've mentioned before, let's have some impact, quality players at number four, five, and six. There's a tremendous rush for spots number one, two, and three, in Indian cricket, let's have these number four, five, six batters out there," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

Manjrekar was very impressed with the clarity of the team selection and how there was reason behind every decision taken at the press conference, he said: "The press conference was a very impressive debut by Ajit Agarkar as chairman of selectors. What I liked is both Rohit and Ajit giving a lot of respect to the people asking the questions. There were a lot of open conversations, no one was scared of trying to reveal something they shouldn't.

"The answer about KL Rahul was important. A niggle has emerged along with the injury he recovered from, and that's why they had an extra keeper. Now that kind of detailed sharing of information is what we need, and I hope they remain candid. Nice articulation of all the decisions that have been taken. And when you look at the squad, I think this is the World Cup squad that you're looking at. Two players will be deleted. There is a chance one of the spinners will be deleted and an extra keeper or maybe a fast bowler. But this is more or less the World Cup squad that we are looking at, barring two players that they would have to leave out."
